Lyneham is a large village (often referred to as a small town) in north Wiltshire, within the civil parish of Lyneham and Bradenstoke, and situated 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Wootton Bassett, 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Calne and 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Swindon. The village is on the A3102 road between Calne and Wootton Bassett.
[edit] RAF Lyneham
RAF Lyneham is at Lyneham. The RAF's C-130 Hercules fleet is based here and C-17 Globemasters from RAF Brize Norton make frequent visits. RAF Lyneham is due to close in 2012-2013, though no final decision has yet been made by the Ministry of Defence. Redevelopment, regeneration and community strategies are being formulated to deal with the loss of the RAF base to the local economy together with future use of the current air base land and MoD housing. The base may eventually provide a major brownfield site for mixed use developments such as new housing, a business/technology park and a modern community centre.

Lyneham has a primary school.[2] Central Lyneham has a small shopping area including a Tesco Express and a Co-Operative minimarket. Also located in the village is a small selection of takeaways selling a range of fast food form pizza to fish'n'chips. A small public library/memorial hall is also located next to the church (Church Of England)
