Negrești-Oaș (Romanian pronunciation: [neˌɡreʃtʲ ˈo̯aʃ]; Hungarian: Avasfelsőfalu, Hungarian pronunciation:[’ɒvɒʃfɛlʃøːfɒlu]) is a town in northwestern Romania, in the county of Satu Mare. It has about 15,057 inhabitants as of 2007 and is located near the Ukrainian border.[1] Two villages, Luna (Lunaforrás) and Tur (Túrvékonya), are administered by the town.

According to the last census from 2002 there were 13,871 people living within the city.
Of this population, 95.12% were ethnic Romanians, while 3.98% were ethnic Hungarians and 0.9% others. 76% were Romanian Orthodox, 11% belonged to another religion, 3.4% were Roman Catholic, 3.1% Pentecostal, 3% Greek-Catholic and 2.3% Reformed.[2] The name Negrești comes from Romanian word "negru" meaning "black".
