Out Cold is a 2001 American comedy film about a group of snowboarders in Alaska. It is the first feature film by the music video directing team The Malloys, after co-directing the surfing documentary Thicker than Water (2000) with musician Jack Johnson. The film presents itself as a parody of 1980s "ski school" movies and makes a number of references to the film Casablanca. A number of elements of the latter, including plot and famous lines, were incorporated into Out Cold.

Plot

Rick Rambis, best friend Luke, and other friends Anthony, "Pig Pen", Jenny, Lance and Stumpy, all live and work at a ski resort on Bull Mountain in Alaska. The mountain and resort were founded by Herbert "Papa" Muntz who loved to drink and ski at the same time. After he died doing so, his son Ted took over the mountain, but now plans to sell it to wealthy business tycoon, John Majors. In addition to being friends, Rick has romantic designs on Jenny, but is held back as he is still getting over his ex, Anna, who mysteriously disappeared after 3 weeks of summer love in Mexico. Rick is the reigning "King of the Mountain" which is the title given to the winner of an annual race down the mountain while drinking a mug of beer. Pig Pen fantasizes about women and likes to play pranks on brother Luke when he passes out drunk each night. Lance is a bartender at the ski town's dive bar who is gay but in denial. Anthony is unable to make it all the way down the mountain on his snowboard without wiping out. And Stumpy is a nut job who gets sidetracked telling crazy stories. Everyone loves to drink and ski and have a great time whilst honoring the party hard spirit of Papa Muntz. Everyone except resort manager Eric, who doesn't care for Luke or the rest of the group's antics.

After arriving at the mountain, John Majors asks Rick to give him a tour. He plans to change the mountain name and turn the second rate ski village into a first class resort. Rick points out that if he builds a chairlift up to Hangman's Peak -- the highest most dangerous peak of the mountain -- it would make it the most popular snow board park in the country. But Majors is more interested with Rick getting his rowdy friends in line so as not to scare off his investors. John brings with him to the mountain his step-daughter, Enga, a busty blonde Swedish ski bunny who everyone immediately drools after, as well as his actual daughter -- who to Rick's surprise turns out to be Anna! Anna apologizes to Rick for showing up out of the blue (she didn't know he worked at the mountain) but the sudden appearance of Anna throws Rick for a loop causing him to accidentally stand up the dinner date he finally made with Jenny. Jenny is understanding but tells Rick he needs to figure out what he wants and decide. Meanwhile, Luke pursues Enga, and after injuring himself trying to impress her with a crazy stunt, they make out in hot tub. But she leaves to go to sleep just when he thought they were going to have sex. Luke then tries to relieve himself by sticking his penis in the bubble jet vent of the hot tub but it gets stuck and he screams in pain. Stumpy has to pry him out after Jenny finds Luke freezing and still stuck in the vent the next day.

Rick forgives Anna after she reveals to him the reason she left was because she was engaged when she met him in Mexico, and that after falling for Rick as well, she was confused and didn't know what to do, so she just left. She reveals that her doctor/pilot fiancé, Barry, is flying in the next day and Rick hugs her and tells her he is happy for her. But he reveals to Luke he still loves her and Luke tells Rick he has to tell Anna how he feels or he will regret it. Rick does just so at a house party and kisses Anna (making her even more confused) and plans with his friends to confront Barry when he arrives and kick his ass if necessary to win Anna back. But when Barry arrives they all discover he is in a wheelchair (from an accident at the X-Games they all saw) and actually a pretty cool guy. Meanwhile, Majors, who is fed up with the group's hijinks and screw-ups, hires mean new employees who start running the resort like an invading army and making major changes, such as changing the dive bar to an upscale club and removing the treasured statue of Papa Muntz from the center of the town. Majors then has Eric give everyone a drug test and after Eric tells a clueless Pig Pen to "go to the bathroom in the cup" he is outraged when Pig Pen gives back his cup with a piece of shit in it. Majors tells Rick he wants him to be his new manager and Rick agrees on the condition that his friends all get to stay, but Majors secretly has Ted fire them behind his back. When Rick finds out about the firing of his friends and the statue being removed from the town he quits his job and races to stop his friends from leaving on Barry's plane (who generously offers to fly them to wherever they need to go).

After Rick gives an inspirational speech about how the mountain is their home and not letting Majors ruin the memory of Papa Muntz, they all grab their snowboards and head for the mountain. Whilst they race down it toward the town Enga agrees to have sex with Pig Pen to spite her stepfather (as she does not like the changes Majors is making either). The snowboarders ski into town and interrupt Majors' presentation to his investors, causing bedlam by doing crazy stunts, knocking over tents and spraying investors with snow. The investors also see Enga and Pig Pen having sex in a cable car. Major is outraged at Rick's betrayal and orders a lackey to lock Anna in his Hummer (which the group defaced by adding "Eat a..." before it's name) but Rick frees her and takes her to an airstrip where Barry waits in his plane. He tells Anna what they had in Mexico was special but that he realized she belongs with Barry. Anna agrees, not wanting to be with her father after hearing him refer to Barry as "Captain Cripple", and the former couple hug and Rick watches Anna fly away. Back at the resort, Luke's boot literally ends up lodged in Eric's ass after Luke does a crazy jump which lands on Eric. Meanwhile, Majors gets knocked into a porta-poddy by the Muntz statue (after Stumpy let is slide down from the mountain) which gets dragged by a snowmobile and lodged upside down in a tree. Ted tells Majors he is no longer selling the mountain. Anthony finally makes it down the mountain in one piece. Lance comes out to everyone who are all cool with it and point out it has been obvious to them all along. And in the last scene, atop Hangman's Peak, Rick asks Jenny out again after revealing he no longer thinks of Anna, and Stumpy reveals (back at the bar where he started telling this story) that the two ended up together before rambling off into another story.
