Peter Mac Cup
The Peter Mac Cup is a trophy awarded to the winning team in annual games between AFL clubs Collingwood and Carlton.[1] The game is used to raise funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.[2]
Background
The Peter Mac Cup is an annual event, run by the Carlton and Collingwood Football Clubs, designed as a fundraising event for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The Carlton and Collingwood Football Clubs have one of the oldest and most celebrated rivalries in the Australian Football League, and attendances at games between the two teams frequently top 80,000. In addition to the day's winning team receiving the Peter Mac Cup, the Cup is supported by the Peter Mac Cup Breakfast, where club presidents, coaches and players to raise awareness and funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Tin-rattlers accepting donations for the Centre are also present at the game.
The annual blockbuster has so far raised more than $1 million for cancer research.
History
The Peter Mac Cup was first contested in Round 6 of the 1993 AFL season, and has been contested annually since. Carlton and Collingwood will always play two home-and-away matches against each other, and the Collingwood home game is designated as the Peter Mac Cup match. The trophy is won by the club which wins this designated match.
Since 2009, all Peter Mac Cup matches have been Collingwood home matches, because the Richard Pratt Cup was established to be contested in Carlton home matches between the clubs. The Richard Pratt Cup is a similar event, which raises money for the Pratt Foundation[3] From 2002 until 2008, the home team alternated each year; and, prior to 2002, the Cup contested in the home match of the club which won the trophy in the previous year.
The presentation of the trophy, and medals for the winning players, takes place in the rooms after the game.
