Taipei City (Chinese: 臺北市 or 台北市, Pinyin: Táiběi-shì, 25°02′N 121°38′E / 25.033°N 121.633°E) is the provisional capital of the Republic of China (R.O.C.) and a special municipality administered directly under the central government of the ROC. It is not to be confused with Taipei County which surrounds the city and is administered separately as part of Taiwan Province. The official capital of the ROC is Nanjing on mainland China which is currently under the administration of the People's Republic of China (P.R.C.). Taipei City is located in the Taipei Basin, is the largest city on Taiwan island and home to 2,619,022 people (2005 census data). It is the political, commercial, and cultural center of Taiwan. Major industries include electronics, textiles, metals, ship-building, and motorcycles. The current mayor is Mr. Ma Ying-Jeou.
