Ramdurg (Ramadurga) is a town in Belgaum district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is believed that the Hindu god, Rama, lived in this location during his exile, hence the name of the town includes Ram (which comes from Rama).

History

Main article: Ramdurg State
    The royal state of Ramdurg, founded in 1799, was one of the non-salute princely states of British India under the Bombay Presidency and later the Deccan States Agency. The Konkanasth dynasty area measures 438 square kilometers. According to the 1901 census, the population was 37,848.[1] Ramdurg acceded to the Dominion of India on March 8, 1948, is currently part of Karnataka state. 
    Ramdurg is also known for its hills, sugar factories, river and trekking. 
    There are many important places near Ramdurg, such as Shabari Kolla, Godachi, Navilu Teerth, Hoovina Kolla, Sunnal Hanumappa, Megundappan Kolla, Ramdurg Forts and Toragal Forts. Sureban is a popular tourist location which is 3km away from Ramdurg, the great historical temple Shree Shabhari Deevi is located there. The temple is located in a dense forest with dramatical changes during the seasons. Sureban is a rich holy place with a great historical background for each temple:

Demographics

    A census is taken every 10 years in India.  In 1991, the city had a population of 29,651.  That number rose significantly in the 2001 census reaching 36,649. The 2011 census shows the town's population to be 34,800.  The population according to the 2011 census is almost equal in numbers between males and females.  Males reached 17,350, whilst females just above at 17,450.[2]
    The small village is considered 100% urban.[3]
    The unemployment rate is way above the national average for India as a whole.  India's unemployment rate is low compared to many other countries.  The current unemployment rate for the country is at a historic low of just 3.46%.[4] The rate for Ramdurg is nearly 60%.  There is 37.5% "usually employed," 4.6% "casually employed" and 57.9% not employed.[5] These terms describing levels of employment are from the Indian census process.
    The 2011 census indicated a very high literacy rate.  Although there are different numbers with a declining trend, the official census in 2011 reported that 81.8% of the local residents were literate.[6]

Hospitals within Ramdurg include the following: Apte Hospital, Bilagi Hospital, Government Hospital, Kulgod Multispeciality Hospital, Kulkarni Hospital, Dhoot Hospital, Agadi Hospital, Kanbur Hospital, Kambi Hospital, Patavardan Hospital, Guru Hospital, Pavate Hospital, and Gunda Pediatric Hospital.

Culture

Godachi Fair (December) at Godachi, which is 16 kilometers from Ramdurg, is a major fair of the district. It is surrounded by the places Siddu Khanpeth, Torgal, Halolli, Sunnal, Budnur, Batakurki, Halgatti, Sureban, Katkol, Chandaragi, Salahalli, Obalapura and Mudkavi. Almost all villages that comes under Ramdurg talluk are historical places. Yarikittur is the village comes under Ramdurg talluk, which is famous for Moharm festival. Sureban and Manihal are the twin cities comes under Ramdurg talluk. The formal name of the Sureban is Shabari vana. The mata Shabari's temple is located nearer to Sureban. There is a belief that Shabari was waiting for Rama in this place. Sureban is also amongst the few places in India were "ChithaBasma of Father of Nation Mahathma Gandhiji" has been kept. Manihal is famous for Shree Shivanand and Shree Atmand Swamiji's Ashrama.

Sunnal is a small village near Ramdurg, which is five kilometers from Ramdurg on Belgavi road. This village is famous for the Maruthi Temple which has an idol of lord Hanuman from ancient times. It is believed by thousands of devotees that by praying to lord Hanuman at Sunnal, one will be blessed twice by the lord Hanuman as his idol is seen by the devotees by both eyes as lord Hanuman is front facing towards the devotees. The Lord Hanuman temple of this village is popularly known as "Sunnal Hanumappa". Also the stretch of forest along Sunnal and Halloli Villages is a place comprising Bears. These are popularly known as "Sunnal Karadi" or "Sunnal Kaddi" in Kannada.

Transport

Belgaum Airport and Hubli Airport are the nearest airports. There is no airport in the city itself. Belgaum airport is about 98 kilometres west. The Hubli airport is about 77 kilometres away. There are railway stations in the region, but none are right in the city without transfers. Belgaum Railway Station, Bagalkot Railway station and Hubli- Dharwad railway stations are the nearest railway stations. They are approximately 40 to 90 kilometres away. 

    Some nearby cities in the district are: Dharwad 80 km, Hubli 100 km, Belgaum 90 km, Bagalkot 70 km.
    The KSRTC bus facility is good.  It connects all most all major cities of Karnataka & and beyond, including Pune, Aurungabad, Tuljapur & south Maharashtra.

Examples of schools within Ramdurg include the following: C. D. Hallyal High School, Taluka Anjuman High School, Government Urdu High School, Pragati Vidyalaya, Samarpana vdyapeetha, Government Boys & Girls School, Vidya Prasark Samiti school, Basaveshawar High School, Cambridge English Medium School, C. S. Bembalagi Science College, Smt. I.S.Yadawad Govt. First Grade College, Govt. P.U.College, Smt. Nagamma Kulgod Para Medical Sciences. Many more schools exist within Ramdurg.

There are good banking facilities and ATM services. Many nationalised banks are present, such as State Bank Of Mysore, State Bank Of India, Krantiveera sangolli rayana co-operative bank, Union Bank Of India, ICICI Bank, IDFC Bank, Syndicate Bank, KVG Bank, Raddi Co-operative Bank etc.
