Rayan or Rayyan (Arabic: ريِّان) is the name to one of Islam's Heaven gate, through which only the observers of Ramadan would enter on the Day of Resurrection.[1]
Rayan is also a first name given to males (and less commonly females) in Arab countries. Its Arabic meaning is "land that is lush and rich in water".
In southern India, Rayan refers to a person with authority. The term came to southern India through trading with Arab merchants on the coasts of Kerala and Tamil-Nadu. Rayan or Rayar is a person who is in power or has been appointed by the ruler to control or oversee a province, especially in South India.[citation needed] Rayan or Rayar is a title conferred on the male members of the rulers of a province.[citation needed] In some cases the title has been hereditary.
In southern India in the Chola, Chera and Pallava dynasties, the title of Rayan/Rayar was bestowed upon those who had fought valiantly in battle.[citation needed] Some of their descendants carry forth the surname today.
Other uses
As given or family name, some areas and streets in the Middle East carry the name.[citation needed] Arabic speaking people also use this name.[citation needed]
