Robert Atkins (nutritionist)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert Coleman Atkins, MD (October 17, 1930 in Columbus, Ohio – April 17, 2003 in New York City) was an American physician and cardiologist, best known for the Atkins Nutritional Approach (or "Atkins Diet"), a popular but controversial way of dieting that entails close control of carbohydrate consumption, emphasizing protein and fat intake, including saturated fat in addition to leaf vegetables and dietary supplements.
Atkins graduated from the University of Michigan in 1951 and received a medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in 1955, after which he specialized in cardiology and complementary medicine.
On April 8, 2003, at age 72, a day after a major snowstorm in New York, Dr. Atkins slipped on the ice while walking to work, hitting his head and causing bleeding around his brain. He lost consciousness on the way to the hospital, where he spent two weeks in intensive care. His death certificate states that the cause of death was "blunt impact injury of head with epidural hematoma".[1]
