Sandgate is a village in the Folkestone & Hythe Urban Area in the Shepway district of Kent County, England. As of 2004, the town re-acquired civil parish status. The civil parish shares the same boundaries as the Folkestone Sandgate ward, at 2.17 km², and with a population of 3,800 as of the 2005 population estimate. It is the site of Sandgate Castle, a Device Fort. H.G. Wells, a famous English author, lived at Spade House, [1] and it was also the birthplace of comedian Hattie Jacques.

The Morcheeba song "The Sea" is written about the popular beachside bar 'Bar Vasa'. The Sandgate Hotel appeared on the Channel 4 programme Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares on February 27, 2006. Other pubs include The Ship Inn, The Providence Inne [2], The Clarendon Inn, The Royal Norfolk Hotel [3], and Gate 28. The Little Fish Shop is also very popular with locals and tourists.

Sandgate was an urban district from 1894 to 1934 (having previously been part of Cheriton parish). It was added to Folkestone in 1934. It re-acquired a parish council in 2004.

More recently, Sandgate has become known for Dave the Dolphin who is often seen out in the bay between Folkestone and Hythe.

Sandgate is also the location of the Shorncliffe Redoubt, a Napoleonic era earthwork fort famous for its association with Sir John Moore and the 95th Regiment of Foot, known as the Rifles.

St Paul's Church lies in the village next to enormous Saga building which is built on the site of Enbrook House.

The local primary school is called Sandgate Primary School and is located on Coolinge Lane. The old Sandgate School building still exists in the village close to Spade House.

The Folkestone Rowing Club is located in Sandgate.
