In 1977, Nash's job afforded her the opportunity to become the first journalist authorized to view the remains of Elvis Presley. Although a country music fan, the experience of seeing Presley's bloated appearance vis-à-vis his historic looks left a lasting impression that almost 20 years later led to her writing a book about the music legend.
I happen to be reading Nash's Revelations compendium right now. This says: On August 16, 1977 . . . the Louisville Courier-Journal, for which I freelanced as the pop music critic, telephoned to say that Elvis Presley was dead. . . . John and I were standing in the press pool in front of Graceland when Presley's head of security, Dick Grob, came out with a bullhorn, stood directly in front of us, and announced, "Any members of the press who want to view the body line up behind these two." / So in we went (pp. xix–xx). And there's no particular epiphany -- none related there, at least -- when she sees the stiff, other than that his partly-snowy sideburns needed redying black.
