West End House (now Alderley Grange) Passing Out of the Hale Family[edit]

In Nick Kingsley's series entitled The Country Houses of Gloucestershire, he makes 3 references to West End House (now Alderley Grange) passing out of the Hale family:

Volume I (2nd ed., 2001), p.38:

"Robert Hale acquired land at Alderley by marriage with Joan Poyntz in 1599, and built a new home here in 1608, which was later known as West End House, and is now called The Grange; but this passed out of the family in the next generation..."

Volume II p.50:

"Alderley Grange, which was known modestly as West End House until the mid-19th century, was first built in 1608 by Robert Hale, but at his death was separated from the rest of his estate and bequeathed to his daughter."

Volume II p.256:

"Robert Hale bought land in the village in 1599 and built a new house in 1608. This was bequeathed to his daughter and passed out of the family."

However, Robert Hale (c.1572-1614), husband of Joan Poyntz (1577-1612) and responsible for the building of West End House, had only one child: Sir Matthew Hale (1609-1676), the famous jurist. Robert Hale could not have bequeathed West End House to his daughter as he had no daughters! Furthermore, in Memoirs of the Life, Character, and Writings of Sir Matthew Hale, Knight, Lord Chief Justice of England by J.B. Williams, the Will of Sir Matthew Hale is quoted, and on p.328 it says:

"First, upon, or shortly after, the marriage of my daughter Mary to Edward Adderley, Esquire, since deceased, I did settle or cause to be secured unto them and the heiress of the body of the said Mary, the tenement in Alderley, wherein my father lived and dyed, and wherein I was borne, and the lands thereunto belonging ... which settlement I doe hereby ratifie and confirme." (see http://books.google.com/books?id=0XELAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA328#v=onepage&q&f=false)

Which would indicate that West End House was bequeathed by Sir Matthew Hale to his daughter (ie Robert Hale's granddaughter), Mary, and her heiress (presumably her daughter).

I have been in contact with Nick Kingsley and advised him of these inconsistencies, but I've not yet had an answer on this point. In the face of the evidence, I conclude that Nick Kingsley is in error in this respect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexandrews (talkcontribs) 22:09, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
