What was her real last name?[edit]

So was the woman's last name "Sullivan" or "Macy"? Which one was it? 174.71.92.119 (talk) 06:38, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article says she was born Sullivan, and she married John Macy. What's the difficulty? 140.147.236.194 (talk) 16:18, 18 March 2010

anniesullivan.org[edit]

It would be wonderful if you would add my website for my distant cousin, Annie Sullivan, to your great and accurate page "Anne Sullivan Macy." Thank You, cmburke@anniesullivan.org (173.2.88.197 (talk) 01:47, 3 September 2010 (UTC)).[reply]

name of article[edit]

  • She was best-known as "Anne Sullivan" or "Annie Sullivan"; this article really should be named "Anne Sullivan" with a redirect from "Anne Sullivan Macy". --Lquilter (talk) 20:46, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • I've moved the article to Anne Sullivan from Anne Sullivan Macy. She is referred to internationally as "Anne Sullivan"; she is referred to in the article itself as "Anne Sullivan"; and throughout Wikipedia, she is generally referred to as "Anne Sullivan" or "Annie Sullivan" with a pipe trick to direct the article to "Anne Sullivan Macy". She herself throughout her life generally referred to herself as "Anne Sullivan". There are no competing "Anne Sullivan"'s to cloud the picture. It makes absolutely no sense to title her article by a name that is practically never used to refer to her. --Lquilter (talk) 20:57, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Problems noted[edit]

I noticed that the area of text in the beginning of the article is incorrect (in grammer in my opinion) and the html is showing on the article. The book reference also has an incorrect html layout. I checked now, its been hours, and still no change. I made this text to bring this matter to attention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.4.248.126 (talk) 04:54, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It would be helpful if you'd be more specific about each of the problems you have identified. Alternatively, you should be able to edit the article yourself to fix them, but I'd be happy to help if I knew exactly where to look and what to look for. Citation for burial[edit]

I don't know how to list a reference or create a citation, but the one needed for Anne Sullivan's burial is at Findagrave.com ( http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=sullivan&GSfn=anne&GSby=1866&GSbyrel=in&GSdy=1936&GSdyrel=in&GSob=n&GRid=659&df=all& There is a picture of the wall plaque for Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller on that page. A better shot of it is on the Helen Keller entry at this link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=567&PIpi=76331 Can someone please edit this in? Thanks. Although it does pop up in articles from time to time, findagrave.com doesn't really meet Wikipedia's guidelines on reliable sources. (If you're really curious, you can search the archives at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard, where I believe the question has been raised more than once.) For information about creating citations, please see WP:CITE. Rivertorch (talk) 07:17, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks much! I'll check into a more reliable resource. And I appreciate the link to directions on citing.  :) History Lunatic (talk) 06:37, 15 September 2013 (UTC)History Lunatic[reply]
No problem. Glad to see you're still editing! Rivertorch (talk) 18:29, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Exchange photo for identical image in higher quality[edit]

I would like to replace the photo with this higher resolution image

File:Portrait of Anne Sullivan, circa 1887.jpg
Formal portrait of Anne Sullivan taken around the time she first journeyed to Tuscumbia, Alabama to teach Helen Keller.

Not done: I am reluctant to use that file because the uploader claimed it to be their own work instead of correctly attributing the photo and noting that the copyright has expired. Please click on the current image to see the correct attribution. If you would like to re-upload the image correctly, you can re-open this request. Inconsistency on age[edit]

The first paragraph says Anne was eight when she contracted the bacterial infection that damaged her eyesight. Later in the article, the age is given as five. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NTgenes (talkcontribs) 15:58, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1920 Census - Keller as head of household[edit]

Wouldn't Keller have been 39 or 40 depending on which month the Census was taken? --Bronwyn Gannan (talk) 09:33, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong date of birth[edit]

I will correct the date of birth in this article. In the biography of Helen Keller it says April 4, 1866. Here it is also dated April 4.--Zartesbitter (talk) 14:38, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is the point of saying 157 years ago?[edit]

Shouldn't you just have the date? The only thing that this does is make it so that every year it has to be changed. JazzaMATE (talk) 03:00, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done I have removed that from Anne Sullivan § Childhood. Incidentally, that template ({{start date and age}}) does update itself magically without human input, but I agree, it was unnecessary. It was also potentially problematic for the page’s “start date” output, which was already provided in the infobox. Cheers for calling that out, JazzaMATE. — HTGS (talk) 04:07, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mess of a paragraph on Tewksbury[edit]

The third paragraph of the "Childhood" section states:

"In 1875, as a result of reports of cruelty to inmates at Tewksbury, including sexually perverted practices and cannibalism, which she partook in, the Massachusetts Board of State Charities launched an investigation into the institution."

There are several major problems with this. First of all, the cited source in reference [5] makes zero mention of sexual abuse or cannibalism at Tewksbury or any subsequent investigation. Second of all, "which she partook in" implies that 9 year-old Sullivan was somehow a perpetrator rather than a victim. Thirdly, 1875 would have likely been one year before Sullivan even arrived at Tewksbury according to this article, which implies that she arrived at age 10:

"When she was eight, her mother died from tuberculosis, and her father abandoned the children two years later for fear that he could not raise them on his own. She and her younger brother, James (Jimmie), were sent to the run-down and overcrowded almshouse in Tewksbury, Massachusetts"

by the way, the [citation needed] sections in the paragraphs above and below the paragraph I mentioned actually are supported directly by reference [5] 2601:646:A101:8680:71E1:71D0:32C6:1857 (talk) 01:53, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Text appears to be verbatim from here with the addition of the offending phrase "which she partook in". Since the matters mentioned are merely rumor, I would surmise the editor meant that she "partook" in the almshouse, and not, per se, cannibalism, etc. Graft | talk 05:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
