Untitled[edit]

Hi: this is in regards to the entry for Barry Beyerstein.

Dr. Beyerstein wrote this profile, and gave me permission to use it on other websites, such as his profile at BCSkeptics.

Unfortunately, he has now passed away, and his SFU faculty profile will be removed soon. I wanted to create a permanent profile at Wikipedia for people to locate in the future.

Bio[edit]

I think Beyerstein's page is very factual but boring beyond belief. I'm going to try and rewrite it using his own words from an article he published about his life in "Skeptical Odysseys". Page rewritten[edit]

Birth year[edit]

Note: While adding authority control links, I noticed that the Library of Congress has his year of birth as 1949, while we have 1947. Knowing his daughter is active on Twitter, I asked her directly. She says he was born in 1947. --Krelnik (talk) 03:03, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed errors[edit]

1. In section on Graphology, I changed "support the invalidity of handwriting analysis." to "support the validity of handwriting analysis."

2. In section on Career, I changed "effects of accidents effecting the brain." to "effects of accidents affecting the brain."

Personal life[edit]

I suggest adding something about how much Barry loved to browse in bookstores. Every time I saw him in Washington, DC, we ended up at a bookstore. The last time that I saw Barry was when we went to Politics and Prose in Washington, DC. Of course, I never imagined it would be the last time.

While I would love to see this page expanded, we can not allow submissions to the page with out secondary sources proving it happened. If you could provide documents that can prove events happened, then we can move forward to including it in the article. Otherwise it is just opinion. A witness statement is not the same as a statement of opinion and it ought not require documentary proof. Barry bought a book when we were at Politics and Prose and we had lunch together. I do not have receipts proving either, not did I take pictures. A witness statement is permitted in a court of law and the attorneys try to prove or disprove the credibility of the witness. I can establish my credibility as a member of the National Capital Area Skeptics and an attendee at both CSICOP conferences and the Skeptics Toolbox seminars that Barry co-sponsored with Ray Hyman and James Alcock in Eugene, Oregon during August for several years. When a picture of one's personal life is painted, it requires personal statements that show that the person is more than what appears on paper. Can it be proven with documentary evidence that Barry loved bookstores? I can't prove that. I can only state that whenever Barry came to visit wherever I lived at the time, he wanted to go to a local bookstore. I also can not prove that when Barry and I went to Politics and Prose, it was the last time that I saw him. That is a statement of my personal experience: not my opinion. It can be established that I knew Barry by confirming this with his wife, daughter, Ray Hyman and a dozen other people. But is that really necessary in order to provide a fuller picture of who Barry was? You can source such a statement with a footnote indicating that the statement was made by me. Another link for the Geekmom.com article is https://geekdad.com/2011/09/interview-with-daniel-loxton-of-junior-skeptic-magazine (which links to the website's archive rather than relying on a tag search).
