1559 or 1562

[edit]

Dear friends,

Yes, I agree that we were taught that the Battle of Mulleriyawa was fought in 1562. However the actual date of battle is 1559, as repeatedly pointed out by the scholars like Paul E Peiris and Gaston Perera.

The reason for the confusion is that there were two battles of Mulleriyawa which fought in two different years, 1559 and 1562. Both battles were won by Sitawaka and in both occasions Sitawaka forces were led by Prince Tikiri Bandara. What Rajavaliya describes as Battle of Mulleriyawa (the one that turned the paddy fields red) was fought in 1559. The one Portuguese describe as Battle of Mulleriyawa was fought in 1562 and centered on the encampment of the vanguard of Sitawaka forces which was commanded by Sitawaka cavalry marshal, Ekanayake Mudali.

Despite the similarities, there are major differences which help us to differentiate the two. In 1559, it was a Portuguese offensive and 1562 Sitawaka was invading the Kotte borders. In 1559 Sitawaka vanguard was led by Wickramasinghe Mudali and in 1562 by Ekanayake Mudali. 1559 was an open battle while 1562 was a siege battle. 1559 battle there were only 4000 Sitawaka regulars while in 1562 there were more than 14000 regular troops with Tikiri Bandara (That’s why 1559 battle was considered as a decisive victory despite 1562 being more costly to the Portuguese in terms of the number of casualties). In 1559 Portuguese were led by Jorge de Menezes Baroche while in 1562 they were led by Balthezar Guedes etc. etc.

I’m planning to create an article for the battle of Mulleriyawa (1562) and hope that’ll clear out the doubts. Thanks.Nishadhi (talk) 07:49, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
