What`s surname is correct, Božidarević or de Bosdari?[edit]

Božidarević is correct. Its pretty obvious from the etymology of the name, as even the Italian sources confirm this. The founder of the family's noble status, Božidar Božidarević, is called "Diodato Bosdari" by Italian sources. "Diodato" means "god's gift" - the translation of the name "Božidar" in Serbo-Croatian. It is further obvious that the family is of Slavic origin as the family name "Božidarević" is extremely common. It is not a translation of Bosdari, but vice versa. Other Slavic names, which are translations of Latin forms, are highly uncommon in Slavic language - as they are slavified Latin names. "Božidarević" (pronounced Bozhidarevich) simply means "son of Božidar" or "descendant of Božidar", and this is common to most Slavic name forms. For example in Russian, the patronymic is derived in a similar manner (Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky - Fyodor son of Mikhail Dostoyevski), while in Serbo-Croatian, the surnames (family names) are derived in this manner. --DIREKTOR ^(TALK) 13:00, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
