Untitled[edit]

I created this page and Dartmouth College athletic teams persuant to a suggestion I had made at Talk:Dartmouth College. Due partially to the fact that a Dartmouth professor assigns Wikipedia writing as a project in one of his courses, Dartmouth College often has a rich diversity of stubby articles on various student groups and teams. These often get VfD by deletionists, and then merged into Dartmouth College as a compromise. This began to lead to a rather cluttered main article. Accordingly, as a middle ground between "one catch-all page" and "lotsa little nuggets", I've made these two spin-offs. Doops | talk 04:34, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Article size / split it up?[edit]

This article is getting pretty massive. The table of contents doesn't even fit on my 1280x800 screen. Would it be worthwhile to split it up a bit? For example, keep miscellaneous organizations in here, but create new articles Dartmouth College publications and Dartmouth College musical groups, which would both be linked into here in a similar fashion as Dartmouth College Greek organizations is now. Agreed -- I plan on starting separate articles for the senior and undergraduate societies. Schi 17:16, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Secret societies and Wikipedia[edit]

There is a substantial section on 'secret' senior societies which is, in general, poorly referenced. Many of the societies listed lack any citations (good, bad, or otherwise) supporting even their bare existence, let alone additional information about their founding, membership, or structure. Some of the interesting and plausible-sounding text I've left in the main article with 'citation needed' ({{cn}}) tags, but the rest I've moved to this talk page.

Before moving material back into the main article, please bear in mind the relevant Wikipedia rules, and please also note that it may be to the benefit of a secret society to present deliberate disinformation which is incompatible with our goal of building an encyclopedia.

Each year, potential new members are chosen to be "tapped" either through personal selection by current members or through society-wide deliberations. Following tapping procedures—which are partly coordinated by the college to ensure fair competition over "tappees" -- new members are inducted into societies through secret ceremonies that usually occur twice a year, in the winter and spring terms. The senior societies are Abaris, Casque and Gauntlet, Cobra, Dragon, Fire & Skoal, Griffin, Phoenix, Phrygian, Sphinx, Tiger and Zenith.

Cobra[edit]

Founded in 1979, Cobra is Dartmouth's oldest all-female secret society and occupies a house on Summer Street. It purposefully limits its number of taps, making it a smaller society.

Fire & Skoal[edit]

Founded in 1975, Fire and Skoal is a co-ed senior society. Modeling the group in part on John Sloan Dickey's "Great Issues" courses, the founders called the DOC house their first home and moved to their current location on South Park Street in the early 1980s. They sought to encourage fellowship among campus leaders through intellectual and social pursuits. Membership is deliberately diverse with representative leadership from the College and members tap those who have also contributed to the community. Fire & Skoal was founded as a 'non-secret' society, maintaining a non-private but exclusive membership roster, however membership became secret in 2005.

Griffin[edit]

The Griffin Society was founded in 1994 as the first secret, co-ed senior society. Membership draws on campus leadership and presence, with a strong contingent of Greek officers, athletic captains, and campus celebrities.

Manatee[edit]

Founded in 2008, Manatee is an all-female secret society. Manatee possesses a physical plant, but the exact location is unknown.

Tiger[edit]

Founded in 2008, Tiger is an all-male secret society.

Phrygian[edit]

The Phrygian Society is an all-male secret society at Dartmouth. While most other senior societies remain under the supervision of the college, Phrygian remains independent of administration recognition. The Dartmouth reported that the society has held meetings with members of the College's Board of Trustees. On September 8, 2007, the New York Times printed a story claiming to quote from the Phrygian Society's website, only to redact [1] [2] the reference later as having come from what the Times called a "hoax" website.[3]

Phoenix[edit]

Founded in 1984, Phoenix is an exclusively female secret society at Dartmouth and does not currently have a physical plant.

Zenith[edit]

Founded in 2010, Zenith is an all-male secret society at Dartmouth. They are rumored to share a physical plant with another college-recognized organization, although the exact organization and location are unknown.
