Death of speaker[edit]

"If the deceased candidate is the Speaker of the United Kingdom seeking re-election the election must be stopped immediately". The entire election of all 500+ candidates, or just the one constituency? If the former it needs to be clearer and given a reference, if the latter then how is this case different? -- John of Reading (talk) 04:10, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The speaker doesn't stand for a party. But the party rules, rather than the independent rules apparently apply.

Expand article, perhaps?[edit]

Should this article be expanded to all countries?

In the United States for instance, there are at least 6 instances of candidates who died and still were elected. One just recently. Here is a short list:

  • Mel Carnahan - Missouri - 2000
  • Patsy Mink - Hawaii - 2002
  • Harry Stonebraker - Missouri - 2009
  • Carl Geary - Tennessee - 2010
  • Jenny Oropeza - California - 2010
  • David Andahl - North Dakota - 2020
