Dates[edit]

Seems to me that the sited "founded" and "abandonded" estimates are related to The Strutt's Park Fort across the river, not to Derventio. --Tappinen (talk) 10:18, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed.--ClemRutter (talk) 10:42, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's true. But what are we to say instead? The fort was apparently used 80-120 AD (according to our text) but the settlement as a whole seems to have been occupied much longer. So what do we put in the infobox?
What does it mean, in the infobox, to say that Derventio was "part of" Icknield Street? Was Icknield Street a line of defence? Andrew Dalby 13:22, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Name?[edit]

Where does the name "Derventio Coritanorum" come from? Is it derived from the Coritani?

Since the 1980s, the generally-academically-accepted reconstruction of the name of the civitas has been "Corieltauvorum"[1]. Markaeologist (talk) 21:05, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Which civitas?[edit]

The map accompanying the Corieltauvi entry [1] has this part of Derbyshire as being Corieltauvi territory. The map for the Cornovii [2] has the Cornovi territory avoiding Derbyshire altogether. Is there any evidence that the current text saying 'This part of Britannia was occupied by a tribe known as the Cornovii' is correct? Markaeologist (talk) 21:35, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to change names and claim that Derby was in Cornovii territory[edit]

Quite simply the fort at Derby cannot both be "Derventio Coritanorum" (Derventio of the Coritani) and simultaneously be in the territory of the Cornovi. So I think the claim that Derby was in Cornovi territory should be changed to something like 'it is not certain to what civitas Derventio belonged, but the Cornovi and Corieltavvi seem the most likely candidates'.

Secondly, Derby was never "Derventio Coritanorum" anyway, because this is an official form of address implying it's a civitas capital. If that's the case, I think there needs to be something about it, but then again, I've never heard such a thing, so I don't think it ever was the capital.

Third, "Coritanorum" has not been the reconstructed form of the civitas name since the 1980s. Not that it matters because it shouldn't appear in this article anyway, not being part of Derby's name, but if Derby is in the territory of the Corieltavvi, we should probably try and spell it properly.

Unless evidence to contradict the general thrust here is presented, I propose to change the article in line with the above.

Strange Sentence[edit]

I removed this: "The Roman all had different this's in like and they always wanted to change.", which seems meaningless. Cunningpal (talk) 01:58, 17 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
