Todo/comments[edit]

  • Preparations for final Mexico landfall? Watches? Warnings? Evacs?
Should all be included now. Plasticup T/C 13:36, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Longer lede, ideally two paragraphs
It's two now, although this article could eventually sustain a 3 paragraph lead. Plasticup T/C 17:58, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The impact section looks disorganized, due to the text squished between the image and the template
This should ease as the section grows. It now looks good on my computer, but other resolutions might still have a squeeze. Plasticup T/C 12:08, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I just have to ask, is there any more impact? Is there an estimate for number of houses damaged/destroyed? Power outages?
Yep done. Plasticup T/C 12:56, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The second paragraph of the impact seems out of place... Also, how come some impact is in the aftermath?
I think this is fixed. Probably mostly. Plasticup T/C 12:51, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Quick fact question
    • a full 6 days before the storm actually arrived. - the NHC has only up to 5 day forecast points. Its cone of error only applies through 120 hours.
6 days from landfall, Mexico was in the 5-day cone. So 6 days before landfall, the NHC said that a Mexican landfall was likely. Plasticup T/C 14:43, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • General copyediting
    • Writing seems a tad flowery (remarkably, catastrophically powerful - BTW, is it really catastrophically powerful if no one was killed?)
    • Try to use more active voice (passive voice= was struck, is finished, etc.)
I worked on this a little, especially when adding new info. Plasticup T/C 13:37, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Dean's well predicted path gave all of the countries in the region ample time to prepare for its arrival.
      • This first sentence of preparations seems a bit awkward. First, it seems unusual to start the entire body of the article with Dean's.
Re-written. Plasticup T/C 13:36, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • With 20,000 food packages ready, the state of Yucatán, Quintana Roo's neighbour to the northwest, declared a green alert
      • I'm not really sure what this sentence means. What is green alert, BTW?
Explained and referenced. Plasticup T/C 13:36, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • 11 a.m. AST (1500 UTC)
      • Is the AST time needed? Most other articles only use UTC. More ideal is displaying the amount of hours before landfall, instead of the exact time, for stats like hurricane watch.
Done. Plasticup T/C 12:51, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • 08:30 UTC (03:30 EDT) - just an FWI, the WPTC doesn't use the colon for exact UTC times. The NHC, for example, has just 2100 UTC.
Done. Plasticup T/C 12:08, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • This rainfall caused one fatality in Jalisco after a mudslide fell on 10 houses, killing one of the occupants - spot the redundancy of saying both one fatality and killing one?

Thanks for the comments. The article is far from complete, but I wanted to get it in the Good Article queue early because I know how long that can sometimes take. Plasticup T/C 22:26, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want to consider this a GA review, then? ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:29, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let's make that decision in a couple days. I'm not sure how long it will take me to bring this article up to snuff. Plasticup T/C 23:25, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I think it is ready for a GA review. Plasticup T/C 18:12, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Before I review it, I strongly suggest you find a damage total (I know you looked, but I guess look again). It would really help complete the article. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 11:59, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In Quintana Roo: 755 millones de pesos from the Federal Gov't, 270 millones de pesos from the State Gov't. Realized 20,000 "acciones de vivienda" (?) and 17 thousand houses. The National Commission of the Water is investing 25 million pesos in repairing irrigation units. The Federal Commission of Electricity restored power (in record time) to almost 100 thousand users in the State of Quintana Roo. In less than one week; it had to repair more than 140 kilometers of lines. Speech by Calderón.

GA Review[edit]

This review is transcluded from Talk:Effects of Hurricane Dean in Mexico/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

I will be reviewing this article for GA status. —Mattisse (Talk) 16:55, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is some sort of expression error in the template - which I am sure you have noticed!
  • This sentence is ambiguous: "Between the two landfalls, Hurricane Dean caused substantial damage and killed 13 people." It could mean in between the two landfalls, Hurricane Dean caused damage (admittedly doesn't make much sense) or With (or including) the two landfalls, Hurricane Dean caused substantial damage. (Hope you get what I mean.) -- admittedly a minor complaint.

I can find no problems with this article.

  1. It is clearly written with a good prose style.
  2. It is well referenced with reliable sources and appears to be factually accurate.
  3. It is written from a neutral point of view.
  4. It appears to cover the topic thoroughly and concisely.
  5. It is compliant with image policy.
  6. It is stable with no edit warring.

Passed for GA. —Mattisse (Talk) 19:16, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
