Merger[edit]

Why not rather divide 'elephants in Kerala' into parts to be distributed among more logical articles, such as temple elephants, instead of this artificial regional article- we don't wont (propbably for the most tediously similar) articles on every Asian region with elephants

pleae merge the two that is better

I Support the removal of this regional title but not the idea of breaking it up into more separate articles.....the article here i think pertains to how elephants are very much part of the culture and traditions and more significantly part of the folklore and legends...in India expecially Kerala, probably srilanka and few south east asian countries Like thailand( forgive my ignorance if i am wrong as i have not heard about other places). And all these are more or less related...Like Temple, Royal Processions (dashahera in mysore), cultural festivals. And then there are Elephants which are special ...few royal elephants of Thailand, special elephants in Srilanka (kandy) who are used to carry the relics of Lord Budha during processions there. I think this article needs to be on its own with a link "see also" under Asian elephants.activevoid 18:27, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I too think that the article has its own relevence. It should not be merged. It is better to add a "see also" tag in the article to link with Indian elephants. Elephants are very much a part of Kerala culture. Elephants owners association and elephant lovers association is registered in Kerala. The description about how elephants are treated in Kerala is very much distinct from a generic narration. The sub topics in this article is unique in all respect like Caring for elephants, Ornaments used for elephants , elephants and their treatment, Elephants in festivals etc, these things are not seen in rest of the part in India. Also Temple elephant is diffrent topic, Elephants of Kerala is not just seen in Hindu Temples.

Oppose the merge The two topics are different (science + culture) as the renaming has made clear. While Kerala culture deserves a separate article at this stage, there's an issue too about building a consistent framework for articles that cover other areas. Have a look at Dasara Elephants and Elephant Balarama ... I think that editor could use some help Mereda 07:43, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, elephants are being used in ever increasing numbers in most of festivals in Kerala, like Temple Festivals, Tourist Promotion Programmes, various Victory Processions, Marriage Functions, etc. Some time back there was a caparisoned elephant being paraded along a tarred road on a hot summer afternoon in a procession of a college union in Quilon town in Kerala!

I doubt whether we can call all these as "Elephants in Kerala Culture" or the absence of any "culture" in Kerala, when it comes to the use of the hapless elephants!

Being a faithful Hindu, I am proud of some fundamental principles preached like,

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu, etc.

Those who care for such principles cannot find any pleasure or pride in keeping these wild elephants in captivity for their life and being tortured to perform for our sadistic pleasures. There is absolutely no basis for treating them like this in the name of any religion what so ever. No scriptures prescribe such practices. It all started some time in the recent past, may be with good intentions at that time; but nowadays it had got perfected into very successful means of marketing techniques.

I consider it as a big blot on the most popular and revered Sri Guruvayurappan Temple that in His name some 60+ hapless elephants are kept in virtual life imprisonment, each tied to one post in front and another at the back (to prevent them from turning around), in a small space, in total violation of the rules and regulations [Kerala captive Elephant (Management and Maintenance) Rules, copy of the same available in the official site of the Forest Department -(www.keralaforest.org)]. Since it is under the umbrella of religion, only Sri Guruvayurappan can bring and end to this practice.
