Nomenclature

Were these named after the Civil War generals? --BDD 16:21, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Not really. I haven't seen a source characterize what they were named after, but a look at Category:Forrest Sherman class destroyers indicates to me that they were named after prominent military figures dating from the Revolutionary War (USS Barry (DD-933)) through Korea (USS Turner Joy (DD-951)). Mitscher-class reference removed

I removed the reference to the Mitscher-class being Forrest Sherman hulls because my research into the Shermans indicate it isn't true. According to "U.S. Destroyers: An Illustrated Design History", by Norman Friedman, the Mitscher and her sisters were a different class altogether. Friedman writes on page 246:

• "When the CNO rejected DD-927 as the basis for mobilization planning (16 February 1951) he ordered the SCB to develop a NEW destroyer of 'reasonable' size. Within the fleet the sentiment was strong that the only good destroyer in existence was the Fletcher, so the SCB tried for a NEW FLETCHER. In April 1951, it issued preliminary characteristics for a NEW standard type, at the time designated SCB-85."

So according to Friedman, the Sherman-class began as an updated version of the Fletcher class design. Elsquared (talk) 04:05, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
