Greenfield International StadiumThe Sports Hub Trivandrum – The facility has been rebranded to the new name Aravindajith (talk) 00:53, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 04:53, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Aravindajith: Or move to Sports Hub Trivandrum? Anthony Appleyard (talk) 04:53, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment It's listed simply as The Sports Hub, Trivandrum on their website. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:23, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't move As per WP:UCN: The ICC, ESPN Cricinfo, cricbuzz, TOI & Hindustan Times all list the forthcoming game as Greenfield Stadium or Greenfield International Stadium. Until most reliable, secondary sources start to call it something else, it should stay as it is. The website above seems to flit between "The Sports Hub", "The Sports Hub Trivandrum" and "The Sports Hub, Trivandrum". A year ago it called itself "The Sports Hub Kariavattom" (after the suburb of Thiruvananthapuram it lies in). I hope it stages some more games and I can plan my next family trip to Kerala to coincide! Spike 'em (talk) 08:33, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I can't read or speak Malayalam, so have not attempted to search any more local news sources. Spike 'em (talk) 08:37, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, going by the sites listed above and this recent article, if anything it should be moved to Greenfield Stadium (Thiruvananathapuram)
  • Comment All my research has been in connection with the upcoming cricket international. The article states it is a multi-use stadium, so if anyone has links to reports of other sports taking place using other names, then please add them and I will reconsider. Spike 'em (talk) 10:27, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Anthony Appleyard: Thanks for reviewing it. Please move it to Sports Hub Trivandrum The stadium was rebranded as 'The Sports Hub, Trivandrum' a long ago and still it has been mentioned wrongly even in mainstream medias. Everyone seem to blame this wiki page for that. When people search for The Sports Hub Trivandrum, google lists this Greenfield stadium page on top. That confuses people and they go back again mentioning the name wrong. Please move it as soon as possible as there is an international match coming up in next week. AravindAjith (talk) 12:03, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You need to find some reliable, secondary sources that refer to the stadium with its new name. Until then we must abide by WP:UCN, Those listed after the change will be given greater weight, but until now all I've found refer to Greenfields Stadium or Greenfields International Stadium. As examples BCCI fixtures page, ESPN Cricinfo Series page, Times of India fixtures page. Wikipedia follows other sources rather than the other way round. Spike 'em (talk) 12:19, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
"Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources."
  • Oppose per Spike, unless something changes in future with the fixture listings. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 13:15, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Closing comments: While the close is based purely on the !votes and their arguments (so it's not a supervote), I think it might be helpful to review the relevant policies here. The rationale is based on a change of official name (yes that's an essay but it's based on WP:AT). Nom continues later The stadium was rebranded as 'The Sports Hub, Trivandrum' a long ago and still it has been mentioned wrongly even in mainstream medias. Everyone seem to blame this wiki page for that. When people search for The Sports Hub Trivandrum, google lists this Greenfield stadium page on top. That confuses people and they go back again mentioning the name wrong. In other words, the reason for this RM is to help to correct (another essay) current English usage. That is explicitly not permitted (and that is policy). Andrewa (talk) 01:47, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Page move / Stadium Name[edit]

I have moved the page back, as per the previous discussion above. Please read the reasons and policies behind this Spike 'em (talk) 17:14, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And further to my points above, from what I can tell, The Sports Hub is not a new name: the whole complex has had this name for some time. It seems that The Sports Hub is meant to refer to the whole complex : on its website it refers to "the stadium" without ever giving it a name, but the address is listed as "The Sports Hub, Trivandrum (Greenfield Stadium)". Previous events e.g.2015 National Games call it Greenfield Stadium. Some of the promotional / ticketing now does list the forthcoming game as being at The Sports Hub, but the majority of sources still call it Greenfield Stadium or Greenfield International Stadium Spike 'em (talk) 17:21, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Some link examples:
It’s going to be a full house at Greenfield for India-NZ tie
Kerala cricket association

  • There is no Greenfield International Stadium. The name 'Greenfield Stadium' was a mistake done by the local media during the construction of the stadium. The government planned to build a greenfield stadium in Karyavattom. Because it was a Greenfield project which was built from scratch on a greenfield land. There was no official name for the stadium during the planning. So the news articles just used "a greenfield stadium in Karyavattom" to mention the stadium. You can see this in this 2012 news article which just says "construction of a greenfield stadium".
Later, the stadium was named "The Sports Hub" by the Main contractor IL&FS. But media continued to use the name as Greenfield Stadium. So both names started to appear. Apart from these names, many sources also used the name "Trivandrum International Stadium", like here and here. Then on September 2017, somebody renamed this page from Trivandrum International Stadium to Greenfield International Stadium. The editor added the word "international" and this name got picked up by KCA.
The Sports Hub is for the entire complex. There is no official name just for the football/cricket stadium. That's why in the official website, it just refers to "the stadium". "Greenfield stadium" means "The Sports Hub" is a greenfield project, as you can see here in the official website of the Main contractor.
This is like the London Stadium. Even though the official name is now London Stadium, majority of sources still use the name Olympic Stadium. But as you said above, some media sources are using the official name "The Sports Hub" to refer to the whole complex and "Greenfield stadium" to refer the Football/Cricket Stadium. But it is not official and since this article is about the entire complex, it's better to rename it to the official name, "The Sports Hub".

There are many reliable sources which use the official name "The Sports Hub"

  • Stadium Contractor official Website | here
  • Official website of the Stadium | here
  • THE STADIUM BUSINESS AWARDS 2016|The Sports Hub won under New Venue of Year Category | here (Page. 7)
  • KCA Website about the ticket exchange here

AG47 Talk 20:46, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are more articles / reliable sources that call it Greenfield including some that you have mentioned
  • This New Indian Express article for example says : "But that is what the Sports Hub Trivandrum, which houses the Greenfield International Stadium, has gone on and done with great success recently."
  • The BCCI, ICC, ESPN Cricinfo all list the forthcoming game as being at Greenfield / Greenfield International.
  • Another Times of India: Trivandrum Greenfield stadium to host Kerala’s first T20 international
  • The Sports Hub website you linked to above has source code littered with "Trivandrum International Stadium" and gives that name to the browser tab opened.
  • I don't believe that the KCA was led to call the ground Greenfield International based on this page being renamed a month ago. Their pages are not dated, but there are plenty, incuding match reports which call the ground the Greenfield (or even Green Field) Stadium.

If the majority of sources move to calling the ground The Sports Hub then I would fully support a page move, but at the moment I don't believe it is clear. Spike 'em (talk) 23:10, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with Spike. Every reliable cricket outlet is using Greenfield Stadium as the name (Cricinfo, ICC, etc). Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 17:19, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted some changes to the article header / infobox, as I think it all ties into the same point : the Common Name of the stadium seems to be Greenfield (International) Stadium, so the article should reflect this. As mentioned in previous discussion, Wikipedia relies on what sources say ; it is not here to right the perceived wrongs of others. If "The Sports Hub" should be the used name then we need to wait for this to be widely reported. Spike 'em (talk) 10:09, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Arun4biju: can we discuss this here, rather than on my talk page? Spike 'em (talk) 11:27, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OKAY Spike 'em,

This is the screenshot proof about the stadium name.

Mail from Sports Hub Stadium Official

I contacted the stadium official. They said, "It was never Green Field stadium. It was only Green field project . Every one started calling it Green field stadium . Actual registered name is The Sports Hub, Trivandrum". The page name in wikipedia about the stadium is also wrong. The real name of the stadium is 'The Sports Hub, Trivandrum.'

Next, I am providing the front view of the stadium and source link. The actual name, 'The Sports hub, Trivandrum' is written in front of the stadium.

Front view of The sports Hub

Source link of the news: The sports hub news

And at the broadcasting time, the commentators used the word The sports Hub, not Greenfield. also at the toss time. You can watch the video from highlights of the match. In the video you can see that, Sanjay Manjrekar welcoming everyone to 'The Sports Hub'.

If you need more clarifications, you can directly contact the stadium officials. website: http://thesportshub.in Email: thesportshub@ilfsindia.com Fran.Majella@ilfsindia.com

So The name of the stadium is 'The Sports Hub, Trivandrum'

Even local newspapers of the city using the wrong name, Greenfield. But Wikipedia should be Right and True.

hello Spike 'em What is the final decision. will you change the Wikipedia page name including URL — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arun4biju (talkcontribs)

It is not for me to decide. It is decided based on consensus and regard for the guidelines, the most import of which here are WP:V and WP:UCN and possible mention for WP:Correct. FWIW I have been persuaded that the stadium is called The Sports Hub (with a possible , Trivandrum for good measure) and should be referred to as such, but it needs to be taken up with the media / sporting organisations whom we rely on as secondary sources. Once they change, I would support a page move. Spike 'em (talk) 12:42, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Okayyy nice Spike 'em

The tide may be turning. In the recent furore over moving ODIs: the Hindu [1] [2]; and Times of India [3]; and Hindustan Times [4] refer to Sports Hub or SportsHub.
Cricinfo is still going with Greenfield though. Spike 'em (talk) 14:31, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you can't beat em, join em?[edit]

I had another look at the ground website today, and lo and behold: [5] has a title of <title>Greenfield International Stadium Trivandrum, Kerala, India</title> and the body of the page has text : "About Greenfield International Stadium" Have they changed their name to meet popular demand, or has the website developer had a moment of madness? There is an ODI against WI soon, so I guess we can see what the media say then. Spike 'em (talk) 11:27, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Another page move[edit]

I've just undone another attempted page move, please detail why the previous consensus is now incorrect. Spike 'em (talk) 13:08, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Vishnu B Das: Please read the above and discuss a page move before doing it yourself. Spike 'em (talk) 11:22, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2019 update[edit]

Following India playing another game here, I did another search to see if the Common Name has changed yet, but unfortunately not : ICC, Times of India, Hindustan Times and crickbuzz are all still using some variation on "Greenfield" Spike 'em (talk) 09:33, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies section[edit]

This will all be forgotten in a month's time and does not need a whole section to itself. A passing mention in the Cricket section is more than sufficient. WP:NOTNEWS states:

  1. News reports. Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events. While news coverage can be useful source material for encyclopedic topics, most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion. For example, routine news reporting on things like announcements, sports, or celebrities is not a sufficient basis for inclusion in the encyclopedia. While including information on recent developments is sometimes appropriate, breaking news should not be emphasized or otherwise treated differently from other information. Timely news subjects not suitable for Wikipedia may be suitable for our sister project Wikinews. Wikipedia is also not written in news style.

Name confusion[edit]

This definitely needs to be mentioned in the article; I'm sure I have previously found reports of this, I'll have a look and post here. In mean time what names do people think the stadium has been known as in past. AFAIK there are:

  • Trivandrum International Stadium (This is littered through headers in stadium website last time I checked it)
  • Greenfield Stadium
  • Greenfield International Stadium
  • The Sports Hub

Anyone for anymore, ideally with media sources using the name? Spike 'em (talk) 08:30, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Greenfield International StadiumThe Sports Hub – Any new international stadium can be called "Greenfield International Stadium", so it is misleading and not the real name. According to official website of people involved in developing it is is named "The Sports Hub, Trivandrum" as you can see at this webpage - http://old.ilfsindia.com/our-work/urban-asset-management/the-sports-hub-trivandrum/+14.139.183.119 (talk) 09:43, 24 February 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). – robertsky (talk) 10:44, 25 February 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. – robertsky (talk) 15:55, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Searches on Google indicates that "Greenfield International Stadium" seems to be the common name, included searches on just "The Sports Hub" or "The Sports Hub, Trivandrum". Also being based in Singapore, search on "The Sports Hub" throws out Singapore Sports Hub more than that of Greenfield. Therefore, this may require a non-India/Singapore based editor to evaluate better. – robertsky (talk) 13:55, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As someone living outside of Asia, my Google searches also show the "Greenfield International Stadium" as the common name. Also, the official Instagram page seems to use the two terms interchangeably Zemmiphobia007 (talk) 14:05, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As such, I oppose the move as proposed. – robertsky (talk) 10:56, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
