Incorrect link for Chick's Law[edit]

Presumably should be http://chlorine.americanchemistry.com/Science-Center/Classroom-Activities/Harriette-Chick-Reveals-the-Laws-of-Disinfection.html. I will amend accordingly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CastWider (talkcontribs) 11:56, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of Chick's time at Liverpool[edit]

Chick spent some time (2 years?) in Liverpool prior to moving to the Lister, presumably working with Boyce and MacConkey on sewage disinfection at a time when Boyce was bacteriologist to the cognate Royal Commission. She published in the "house" journal and her contribution is referenced there by MacConkey (remembered for MacConkey agar). This is a phase of Chick's career that is otherwise rather obscure. I will add a section summarizing what is known. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CastWider (talkcontribs) 12:00, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Some modest background on Chick's pre-Lister career: https://archive.org/stream/dictionaryofnati197180lees#page/142/mode/2up/

There is a useful chronology in the archives of the Wellcome Trust http://archives.wellcome.ac.uk/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=Show.tcl&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqPos=0&dsqSearch=%28AltRefNo==%27PP/CHI%27%29 . Presumably she worked in Vienna under Max von Gruber prior to going to Liverpool as suggested by this alternative chronology http://www.studymore.org.uk/bio.htm#HarrietteChick . She appears to have been in the second year of her (normally) two-year Exhibition of 1851 scholarship in 1900 so presumably went to Liverpool in 1898 http://www.jstor.org/stable/1628760?seq=2#page_scan_tab_contents (paywalled?); she was affiliated with Liverpool at this time. She published papers in the (Liverpool) Thompson Yates Laboratories Reports in 1900 and 1901 (available via archive.org). She was awarded a London DSc in 1904 in part for her work on growth of algae in polluted waters published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1902 (communicated by Boyce, Liverpool). She was recommended to apply for a Jenner Memorial studentship at the Lister by Sherrington (Liverpool) and she was awarded this in 1905 in the face of significant opposition. Presumably she worked in Munich during the period 1902-1905 as von Gruber relocated there in 1902. Her diaries are in the Wellcome Library archive but run from 1906 only.

Chick's earlier diary covering the Vienna/Liverpool/Munich period has surfaced and the alternative chronology mentioned above is based on it. http://www.studymore.org.uk/ymew.htm

Details of the Exhibition of 1851 award make it clear that the work involved both Liverpool and Vienna http://alumni.royalcommission1851.org/search/results/260264bb7acae91b1133b980a1db8afc/public

MRC Centenary[edit]

Chick featured prominently in the UK Medical Research Council's centenary celebrations, e.g. exhibition http://www.centenary.mrc.ac.uk/strictlyscience/yesterday/ and comic book http://issuu.com/cscweb/docs/heroesofhealth?e=5709253/2994108 CastWider (talk) 14:52, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Chronological order[edit]

Currently some items appear out of chronological order. If there are no objections I will restructure the existing content and add information regarding the Liverpool period in the appropriate place. Some clarification regarding the significance of the work on rickets (for which she is most often remembered) would also be appropriate. Useful source in addition to those given: http://jn.nutrition.org/content/138/5/827.long CastWider (talk) 19:22, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The spelling of Hariette is incorrect but derives from the name used on Wikimedia Commons. CastWider (talk) 16:22, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed legend typo -- getting the hang of this a little better now.CastWider (talk) 16:25, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Genealogy[edit]

The current version states "She was born into a Methodist family, the fifth of eleven children. The third daughter among the twelve" which is confusing to me. I suggest following the genealogy here http://www.studymore.org.uk/ymew.htm#HarrietteChick which would make her the sixth child of twelve and one of seven daughters who survived beyond infancy. Given the current version is ambiguous, I will update now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CastWider (talkcontribs) 07:55, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Discrimination[edit]

The Lister incident is already mentioned (although it might be appropriate to specify "two objections" rather than "a number"). I think it's worth mentioning the Biochemical Club/Society as well http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/history/chm/research_teaching/womenbiochemists/biochemicalsociety/ . — Preceding unsigned comment added by CastWider (talkcontribs) 09:18, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Activism[edit]

Chick co-signed a letter to The Times pointing out that relaxation of rationing in Britain in 1944 contrasted starkly with starvation conditions in the nearby continent. CastWider (talk) 17:02, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Undergraduate degree[edit]

Reorganizing the flow of the article[edit]

Hi All, I would like to reorganize the article headers & subheaders to match that of other biographies as such headers (subheaders): Biography (early years, education, and death), Work(doctorate research, lister institute), Honors and distinctions, Select publications, References. I think this would improve the Would like to know what the thoughts of the wiki community is on this reorganization before I go ahead and restructure. Let me know! Thanks.
