Unknown meaning of paragraph[edit]

I don’t understand the meaning of the following paragraph from the article. It appears to mean that Jews in the region were pressured to convert, and that some did so.“Under the moral pressure of leadership, Orthodox clergy and higher ranks of the Russian Empire, the Jews of the region to improve their living conditions turned into the Christian faith (mainly Orthodox Christianity).
