Removing Beecham note[edit]

The following note recently appeared in the article. It seems non-encyclopedic in tone, so I have removed it to the talk page:

"Note: This page has just previously listed Sir Thomas Beecham as also music director of the Houston Symphony in 1954. This is misinformation that has erroneously appeared in Houston Symphony programs for a long time, to gloss over how important the appointment to music director Ferenc Fricsay was in 1954. In fact, Sir Thomas Beecham never conducted here in 1954 - at least not as part of the 1954-55 season until a month or two into 1955. He conducted instead four weekends of concerts at the end of the 1954-55 season, the Verdi Requiem among which, it is quite obviously, with Maria Stader to have been originally and Gabor Carelli still a soloist in it, to have been originally assigned at the end of that season to Ferenc Fricsay.

"Sir Thomas Beecham was a very intestimably fine musician in his own right and if having seen such willful error himself had sufficient integrity to have wanted to disavow the claim, one can be sure. He was either not fully abreast of the circumstances surrounding Fricsay's departure from here or most likely felt a bit embarrassed once he did know to have taken Fricsay's place in such dishonorable circumstances as happened that season." List of musicians[edit]

User:DJRafe removed the list of musicians from the article, giving as a rationale "it doesn't really add anything." I am not sure what is meant by that. Yes, it adds a list of musicians, past and present, from the Houston Symphony who have been sufficiently notable to have their own articles in Wikipedia. The Wikipedia articles for virtually every city and town, every high school and college, every national fraternity or sorority, etc., includes a list of notable residents or alumni. Why shouldn't the same be true for a professional orchestra, whose members more directly and integrally constitute the group (and a small, elite group at that)? In Wikipedia articles on rock groups, should the names of the individuals in the group be removed wherever they appear? I strongly disagree with the reasons given for the removal, and I am restoring the list. 173.173.120.49 (talk) 14:12, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree, the musicians should remain. Most if not all performing arts groups will include the name of the performers, especially if they have a linked article. In my opinion, DJRafe's removal could be considered borderline vandalism by many editors. Postoak (talk) 20:02, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
