Deletion / Re-creation

A previous "Ishi Press" article was deleted. The reason given in the edit summary was that it was an article by Sam Sloan about Sam Sloan's company. However, that wasn't the only reason. There were notability concerns. If notability had been met, then the summary reason for deletion of the other article would have been insufficient. So, there would have to be notability concerns about this, another Ishi Press article.

As a go player, I can attest to the importance of Ishi Press to go in the United States in the 1980s and early 1990s. But, I'm not an authority, so that doesn't help meet Wikipedia's standards. It means that I would like to see the article remain, and expanded on. I would like more details about its founding, its growth, its problems, and attempts to deal with those problems. I'd like to see information about Sloan becoming president that doesn't come from Sloan. I'd like information about other entities having "Ishi Press" in their name.

All this might not be possible. If it isn't possible, then, it may be appropriate that this article also is deleted. If the article has to be deleted, maybe its contents could be incorporated into another article, with a redirect page. -- SlowJog (talk) 16:25, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

I think there is no doubt about the notability of Ishi Press: it did more than anyone to bring Go to the United States. So, no need to delete the page. Now, the sources are a real problem. I spent a few hours googling, and the best I came up with was all those depositions on Sam Sloan's web site. The primary-sources tag is quite appropriate. Lots of people would like to know what happened to Ishi Press (including me: that's how I ended up spending an afternoon re-starting this page). Pretty much all that's taken from Sloan's stuff is that Ishi Press became embroiled in legal difficulties and when Sloan took it over. Maybe someone could create better sources. Mabe we could ask the Nihon Ki-in, AGA, BGA, and/or the EGF, to investigate and write articles on the history of Ishi for their publications. -- SlowJog (talk) 14:46, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Sources?

I have concerns about the sources. One source is from Sam Sloan, and seems to be a rant against some people involved with Ishi Press. Another source is a deposition also by Sloan. Both sources represent claims by Sloan. Sources from neutral parties should be used, if they can be found. If they cannot be found, what would action would be appropriate?

Regarding my edits of April 18, 2010:

• I re-added the Primary Sources tag. Sensei's Library does not qualify as a good source.
• While the statement that Sam Sloan is trying to expand Ishi Press into publishing books on Chess and Chess Variants may be true, this is not supported by the Sensei's Libary entry on Ishi Press. I moved the link to Sensei's Libary from a reference to an external link.
• Removed link to Hartland Synder article. It doesn't seem likely the physicist, who died in 1962, is the same person.

Go World Magazine?

Did Ishi Press ever publish Go World magazine? Sensei's Library claims Go World was published by Kisedo. http://senseis.xmp.net/?GoWorld , from 1977 to 2012. SlowJog (talk) 01:28, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Ishi Press did publish Go World. I have physical copies of the magazine from the late 80s and early 90s which say "Ishi Press" on the cover. File:Go_World_Issue_59.jpg

Is Go World still being published? As far as I can tell, publication ceased in 2012. Unless it can be verified it is being published, by Ishi, the lede should say Ishi formerly published Go World magazine. SlowJog (talk) 15:30, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Yes, Amazon currently lists and sells many books for which Ishi Press is the publisher, for example https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/0923891463?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details . Ishi Press seems to be doing print-on-demand for many classic formerly out-of-print chess books. On one hand, it is great to be able to buy these classic books in a fresh printing. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that they mostly now come with a self-noting introduction by Sam Sloan. According to Goodreads ( https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/48769.Sam_Sloan ), Sam Sloan now lists himself as co-author of nearly 600 books, including such classics as Modern Chess Openings.
