Lightest athlete to throw over 20 m[edit]

There is some debate over this issue. I suggest that some evidence is shown that he is not the lightest to have thrown over 20 m. All news articles I can find state that he is the lightest athlete to do so. Rudolph89 (talk) 01:04, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The initial claim was that Jacko was the first under 100kg to throw 20m. This discussion at www.trackandfieldnews.com mentions that there were/are several athletes under 100kg. The later claim that he is the lightest may be correct but the discussion mentions at least one who may have been lighter than Jacko. Unless there is a primary source for this claim I wouldn't rely on any newspaper article to get the facts right (given that most of them have got so many other 'facts' wrong). "He received a deserved standing ovation." is not encyclopedic, nor is "He soon bettered that"...". As for "...which earned him the under 16 and the then under 18 "World Youth Best"..." there is no 'under 16 world best'. DerbyCountyinNZ ^{(Talk Contribs)} 11:59, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"He soon bettered" is a chronological reference to a few meets in the northern hemisphere last year. Perhaps soon improved or thn improved. As for - "there is no 'under 16 world best'" - it was there before I edited, and is still there on the reversion you have reposted. As far as the standing ovation - that was recognition for one of the greatest junior athletic performances ever, so what if it was not "encyclopaedic"?? Records, records and bests[edit]

As this comes up frequently in this article I thought it best to differentiate between Records, records and best performances.

The IAAF, the international governing body for track and field, recognises World Records (any age, senior equipment), World Junior Records (athlete must be aged under 20 throughout the year of the performance, junior equipment) and World Youth Best Performances (athlete must be aged under 18 throughout the year of the performance, youth equipment). These are official Records.

There are also various lists compiled by statisticians for performances that fall outside the scope of the official Records. These may be for athletes using equipment other than that specified for their age group or for performances achieved at a specific age rather than for an age grouping. These are unofficial records and should not be classed the same as official Records.

As such Jacko has not broken any World Records (yet). He has broken the World Youth Best Performance for Shot Put twice (23.86 and 24.35). He has broken numerous world age records but these are not the same as World Records.

Also bear in mind that:

WYB Performances began with the introduction of the age group (and shot weight of 5kg) in 1998 and the weights for the junior male athletes (shot 6kg) were changed in 2002. This means that the IAAF list of all-time shot put performances for Youths and Juniors are distorted in favour of recent performances.
New Zealand athletics records vary considerably from International records. This is because as a Southern Hemisphere country the New Zealand athletics season spans 2 calendar years. The criteria for records (age group, equipment, definition of season etc) has changed on numerous occasions (and may well change again in the near future). Therefore any assumption that a World Record/record/best is also a NZ record and vica versa would be incorrect. As an example Jacko's WYB shot of 24.35 is a NZ age 17 Record (as Athletics NZ recognises age records for 16, 17, 18 and 19 year olds) even though technically Jacko became a Junior on 1 May as NZ age groups are M16 (for athletes aged 16 and under) and M19 (for athletes aged 19 and under) ~with age taken at 31 December in the middle of the season, the season ending on 30 April.

This may clarify things for some users, but may also make things more confusing. Don't worry if it does, you are certainly not alone! DerbyCountyinNZ ^{(Talk Contribs)} 00:17, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
