Sean Lennon[edit]

Not sure about the inclusion of Sean Lennon, as I'm not sure he's British. He was born in New York and I believe he is, and always has been, a US citizen. He could claim citizenship based on having a British father, but I don't beleive he ever has. Can anyone shed any light on this? Indisciplined (talk) 17:18, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Iain Duncan Smith[edit]

As Japanese as 1/8th of his ancestry might be, can IDS seriously be called 'British Japanese'? Surely use of a qualifier before 'British' implies that there is a profound link between the two identites for the person it is being applied to. It may well be an interesting fact, but he is not Japanese, ethnically or culturally.Porridgebowl (talk) 05:55, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese expatriates[edit]

An anonymous IP removed [[Category:Japanese expatriates]] ... and I reverted the edit. This posting explains a bit about what I was thinking.

A couple of months ago, I would have thought this edit was self-evident, obvious; but now I'm persuaded to examine the issues a bit more closely. This changed perspective comes as a result of discussions with others interested in {{template:Japanese diaspora}}. I'm wondering about the extent to which Wikipedia articles about the Nikkei might be better served by melding or marrying the slightly divergent perspectives in:

Expressed differently, is this article about Japanese British to be confined solely to those British citizens of Japanese ancestry living in Briton? Well, yes of course ... but ....

But then the question becomes, what about all the other people who make up the Japanese community in the United Kingdom. If you attend a summer Obon matsuri, the noteworthy memories you take away will not include the passport status of each person in that gathering. If the article needs to address something about

  • (a) individual Britons with ancestors coming from an East Asian string of islands south of the Sakhalin Penninsula?
  • (b) an ethnic group within the statistical and demographic cohort of persons living in the United Kingdom?
  • (c) the Japanese community in a variety of locations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
  • (d) maybe others I just haven't thought to mention just now?

If these are relevant factors to be considered, then that easy decision about deleting the category is not so simple. --Tenmei (talk) 04:34, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Demographics[edit]

The demographics seem to be quite misleading. I am sure that a substantial number of white people were born in Japan when their parents were working or living there, but then moved back to the UK. On the other hand, a lot of Japanese people were born in the UK. Japanese community in the United Kingdom → Japanese in the United Kingdom – Drop the use of community. The title should be the same as all the other article that pertain to ethnic groups living the in the UK. Weak support: There appears little consistency in any of the categories of which this article is a member! See Category:Japanese diaspora by country, Category:British people of Asian descent and Category:Immigration to the United Kingdom by country of origin for example. But agree that community seems out of place. Suggest move or relist, unsure of which, this is an improvement but possibly not the best solution, and is there an active Wikiproject that might be interested in this and wider issues?
