In the section about the demolition, reference is made to another LA Times article by Valerie Reitman. I've found a copy of the article, but not on the LA Times site itself. Should the article be renamed to reflect current ownership?[edit]

Although the current name of this article as Johnie's Broiler was appropriate when it was first created in May 2006‎, is this article name still appropriate in 2017? Since that time, the business has changed names. Would it be better for the name of the article be changed to Bob's Big Boy Broiler so it can reflect the name of the current business? -- 68.50.32.85 (talk) 00:08, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. And why is the JB Burgers mentioned as non-sequitor? Is JB Burgers the original corporation that ran this location as Johnies (and possibly also the Wilshire location that formerly was Romeo's Times Square?) It's very unclear.     • Comment – Although the first page of the company's website is just a verbatim copy of the main Bob's Big Boy corporate website (the Downey franchise owner didn't bother to remove the phrase "SERVING BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER 24/7" after copying material from the parent company's corporate manual when their actual operating hours, mentioned elsewhere on the website, are only 7 a.m.–11 p.m. Just very sloppy web work in putting together the website by the Downey franchise.), its History page mentions "In October of 2009, under the name Bob’s Big Boy Broiler, the legendary restaurant opened its doors to the public.   • Support I had originally thought I would oppose per Amakuru who does make a good argument regarding the restaurant's history, but based on WP:COMMONNAME, I believe the restaurant is now better known under its new name. Trying combinations of Google searches of "Bob's Big Boy Broiler" to ensure I narrow it down to the exact location post-rebuild (mandatory inclusion of "Downey", exclusion of "Johnie's", etc.), I still get about double the hits of "Johnie's Broiler". To Dicklyon's point, the website listed does not call it Bob's Big Boy Broiler anywhere, but if you use Google Maps street view you can read the sign (and, preciously, the face of the Big Boy statue is blurred for privacy!).     Sweet! When Street View first launched face blurring (initially in New York City) it blurred the face of a horse in Central Park. I led the team that designed the cameras that took those pictures, and wrote the HDR rendering and some of their other color processing code (most of what I did there has been replaced by a new generation of hardware and software since then, so don't send me bug reports). But looking at the picture, I see a "Bob's Big Boy" logo in one place, and lowercase "broiler" in another. Not really convincing for what the name of the place is.     • Comment – Huh??? Is Johnie's Broiler vs. Johnie's Coffee Shop less confusing than Bob's Big Boy Broiler vs Bob's Big Boy? All of those examples of names of articles with similar sounding names.       • While the restaurant is now part of the Bob's Big Boy chain, according to the article, its notability derives from its history, and WP:DEFUNCT applies. Wikipedia does not try to use the most current official names; it uses the common name associated with the notability of the topic. This restaurant is much more notable and historically important as "Johnies' Broiler" (the name it had for more than 30 years) than as "Bob's Big Boy Broiler". —BarrelProof (talk) 19:28, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: Why is the Broiler notable enough to have an article? Certainly not as a Big Boy Restaurant — no other Big Boy locations garner an individual article. In fact, only a small part of the article is about being a Bob's Big Boy. Regardless of the current business name, the notability belongs to Johnie's Broiler.
Since only five Bob's Big Boys exist, the coverage in the Bob's Big Boy article could be expanded beyond a single sentence. The name change could be reconsidered in the future. Meanwhile, "Bob's Big Boy Broiler" redirects to Johnie's.— βox73 (৳alk) 02:24, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Although there are only five now, at some point in time there were hundreds of them – perhaps thousands (the article doesn't seem clear about that). And that was all a part of an even-larger Big Boy Restaurants operation. —BarrelProof (talk) 06:04, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
By 1983, I'd say close to 1100 Big Boy Restaurants, and by the late 1980s 200-300 of the Big Boy chain operating as Bob's Big Boys. It's difficult to pin down because of Marriott's dramatic expansion, conversion of interstate Ho Jo's, use of the "Bob's" name by JB's, but also regional franchisees dropping out. — βox73 (৳alk) 19:17, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we're somewhat drifting off topic here, but the article about Bob's Big Boy says there were 238 Bob's Big Boy restaurants operated by Marriott by 1989. There were also some other Bob's Big Boys that were not operated by Marriott, so I suspect the total number was over 300. I tend to think that this one restaurant, which was not a Bob's Big Boy until 2009, is not important enough to the Bob's Big Boy phenomenon that it would justify a very lengthy discussion in the Bob's Big Boy article. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@BarrelProof:Right, there were 238 Marriott Bob's, 5 owned by the Davenport family in Pennsylvania, I believe the Manners Big Boy units in Cleveland were using "Bob's" name in 89 (up to 26, probably less), a few in Hawaii and Alaska were probably privately owned, and JB's Big Boy were doing business as "Bob's" in their restaurants in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Northern California, but I'm not sure how many that is. We can document that it's more that 240, ie, 238 + 5 + ?. When Elias bought Big Boy there were 455 restaurants, so I believe it was less than 300 Bob's. Elias started an effort to eliminate franchise names, which by 2001 or so, made all the units just "Big Boy" except for Bob's in California. (Frisch's became unaffiliated with Big Boy but has right to use the name.) Some people began to assume all Big Boys were Bob's Big Boys including an editor at the Bob's Big Boy page. So I'm trying to guard against that. As far as the highest number of Bob's goes, 1989 was the year, and we should find how many others existed, revising the number as we go. Otherwise, IMO the Broiler deserves maybe a paragraph at Bob's Big Boy, most focused on 2009+. — βox73 (৳alk) 22:25, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
