The citation given for Pingree 1981 is inaccurate[edit]

The article states that Pingree 1981 (p 6) gives that Katyayana discusses an early version of the Pythagorean formula however this is not accurate, "The first section of the Katyayana, which consists of ninety sutras, is divided into six kandikds. It teaches, in language often identical with or similar to the Apastamba’s, the geometrical propositions (including the first detailed instruc¬ tions for determining the cardinal directions from the shadows cast by a gnomon), the measures employed in constructing the altars, and their spatial relation¬ ships. The second section, Avhich consists of more than 40 verses, repeats some of the material given in the sutra section, and adds to it descriptions of the rope, the gnomon, and the expert builder of altars. There are commentaries on the Katyayana by Karka, 27 who wrote before 1260/1270 (Karkabhasya); by Rama Vajapeyin, who composed three of them 28 (the Sulbavarttika, a metrical gloss on the Katyayana and on the Karkabhasya, in 1434; the Sulbavarttikatika, a commentary on the preceding; and the Sulbasutravrtti, a prose commentary based on the Sulbavarttika) at Naimisa in Uttarapradesa; and by Mahldhara 29 at Varanasi in 1590 (iSulbasutravivarana)."

Is the full discussion this book gives on Katyayana, it discusses nothing on even triangles let alone the pythagorean theorem, Imkirbynow (talk) 17:51, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Date → 3rd century BCE[edit]

I changed the date in the lede from "(est. c. 6th to 3rd century BCE)" to "(c. 3rd century BCE)".

The date has three footnotes attached to it. The two reliable sources of the three (Oxford Reference and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) both say 3rd century. The third source (wisdomlib.org) is a collection of quotes from anywhere and everywhere that the website owner could get his hands on and can only be as reliable as the sources of the individual quotes. But even here not a single one of those random quotes gives a 6th-century date for this Kātyāyana — they too say 3rd century, and maybe 4th century. 2604:3D09:A984:A600:892B:E020:A023:C980 (talk) 01:41, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
