The origin of "Gatooma"[edit]

It is highly unlikely that the name originated in Australia. There is a hill nearby which was identified to the settlers as "Kaduma", and this is where the name almost certainly originated. The Rio Tinto mining company only became involved in the area in the mid 1950s when, under the aegis of one of its directors, Tiny Rowland, it purchased a number of mines (Cam & Motor, Pickstone and Patchway) from the Lonrho group. Once he had divested Lonrho of what he considered their financial lame ducks, Rowland left Rio Tinto and joined Lonrho, subsequently becoming it's London-based chief executive. Rio Tinto at that time was a British-based company and I doubt that there were many Australians in its ranks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Klipdok (talkcontribs) 15:11, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
