Railway Connection to Königsberg / Kaliningrad[edit]

There has been all the time since opening the private standard gauge (1435 mm) on 09.05.1916 railway, the Gross Raum - Powunden railway to Königsberg. The place was renamed later by the Germans to Ellerkrug. The distance from Ellerkrug to Königsberg Nordbahnhof (later Kaliningrad Severnaja) by rail was 23.35 km. According to Russian topographic map 1:100.000 the current railway line circles around the airport area. One wonder only why this railway connection is not used to improve the Khrabrovo airport service to and from Kaliningrad. The first 13.1 km out from Königsberg Nordbahnhof to Gross Raum village belonged to Königsberg - Cranzer Eisenbahn (opened on 31.12.1885). Up to 1945 the service on both lines was operated by Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn - Gesellschaft, Königsberg (Pr), not by the Deutsche Reichsbahn´s RBD Königsberg. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.112.88.122 (talk) 07:32, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
