How can Kim So-wol be the RR, when his name is written with 어and not 오? Shouldn't it be Kim So-weol? Kdammers 09:34, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The HTTP links to poetry are broken. Anyone who can find good ones, please fix this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.51.185.45 (talk) 03:21, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kim So-wol is correct. In RR 어 is written eo, but ㅝ is written as wo and therefore 월 is wol.

"He wrote it while still a teenager in 1925" If born in 1902, he would be 22 or 23 (by Western reckoning) in 1925, not still a teenager. Perhaps he wrote while a teenager, but it didn't get published until later? Needs clarification.

Small edits wished from the translator of poem "Azaleas": In line 4, "from Yaksan at Yong-Byun" could be changed to "at Yaksan, Yong-Byun" in view of tonation of the poem. — Preceding Also "black Death" can be changed to "pale death" or "darn death", since black death reminisce of the plague(here plague is "love").

Someone without signing in on clear ID tried to change my translation into English poesy. The one translated appear not poetic, and just direct word-to-word translation without using proper poetic expression. I believe it will lower the quality of the poem. If that person desires to publish, pls enlist your source of translation and make it more poetic. Also, that translation needs cadence/rhythm in that writing. Thanks.

Translation of Azaleas[edit]

Instead of our own translation of his most famous poem, with a current archaic forms (including the nonword? "hith" instead of "hither"), can't we get a sourced translation, such as one of the ones by Brother Anthony?Kdammers (talk) 10:09, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

At first I thought that botch of a translation was by Peter Lee, but it was another user's, unbelievably signing his name to it against all guidelines. I have substituted Peter Lee's 1974 revised translation, referenced in the article. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 01:44, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, it seemed necessary to fill out the comment on difficulties of interpretation. Simply stating that they exist was hardly helpful. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 13:36, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The translation of poem is for those who understand poems and English. Just word to word translation is never close to Sowol Kim's poem. I reviewed all those written before, they are either redundant Konglish or no arts in it. No one appreciate and understand Sowol Kim's art. thus you end up depreciating his Poetic muse. I strongly suggest erase your translation. Who will read and understand your translation, unless you are native Korean?

My version has been on this page for long without qualms, and I presented to graduate students all the versions, and they preferred my translation. I do not feel any, yet just hope to present Sowol Kim, right. He does deserve that. My version of translation of Sowol Kim's Azalea is to be published. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leedynamo (talkcontribs)

Your ungrammatical, incorrect English demonstrates how badly equipped you are to translate. It takes the breath away to see you claiming that your incompetent version has been left "without qualms" on the very thread that complains of it and recommends finding a properly referenced version. In addition, it is against Wikipaedia guidelines to be signing your name to such work. I sympathise with your wish to highlight the achievements of Korean culture but suggest that what you are doing is counterproductive. And by the way, it is not "my" translation but one from an impeccable Korean-American source. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 19:32, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yet, I feel you should study English poems first before you comment any. Please feel free to show current version vs my translation to anyone, then you realize the difference and depth. I did not put my full name, just initials. What shall I do, good luck with your English literature. Please study, before you move. No further comment. Impeccable? I felt so awkward to read infantile, philistine version of translation. I will wait. When any intellectuals read current version of translation, how would they feel about Sowol? you are mis-presenting him. that is not right. There's no rhythms, rhymes, cadences, nothing in your version of translation. Is this a poem or an essay, or just scribbling? Then anyone can do. Sowol deserve more than that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leedynamo (talkcontribs)

I do not wish to offend any one's feeling, yet I should not spoil the works of original writers, including Sowol Kim, Yoon Dong-Ju, Seo Jung-JU, Cho Chi-hun, Han Youngwoon, Kim Youngnang. I have been polishing over the 3 years all those gem-like poems representative of Korea in her awakening period. I have to admit that I was not aware of author etiquette?, but has been on the page for years. it is also a real etiquette to notify to me before anyone erase my version of poems without any words. I have lived in Korea for the past 30 years, and another 30 years here in the U.S. As a physician, I encountered many occasions that Americans in general, westerners in general have no clue of Koreans at all, in terms of how we feel, what is our background etc. I realized they do not have any good windows through which they can see the Korean art and literature. Particularly literature part. There are many attempts, but since we have such different langusge, literally impossible to impose ours too much. The only option left is "how are we fitting our literature work, particularly poems, to their format to the best we can as far as we do not spoil original work?" This is essential for their understanding. We have to use the format and words for English translation of poems. I admit I erased, for it was not fair to the original poets, as Mzilikazil1939 did mine without my permission, without any understanding. But We cannot move the readers of all these poems translated in English as the poets wished to intend. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leedynamo (talkcontribs) 16:01, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please learn how to sign your name on talk pages: WP:SIG. Also take a look at WP:OWN and you will see that we do not have to ask your permission to make changes, especially when the translation is as incompetent as yours. I see you have already tried to scare off another editor who deleted your work by accusing him of being unscrupulous here. WP policy is to reference, or even quote, available translations, as Kdammers suggested above. Producing your own in such cases verges on WP:OR original research.
