Origins of the word[edit]

Landsgemeinde in English means literaly something like "community of the country" and not "provincial assembly". It is combined of the two words "Lands" in high-german it would be "Landes", the genetive form of "Land" meaning land, country, terra, territory, state (and in my opinion sometimes also something like soil or fertile land, when talking about peasants) and Gemeinde is difficult to translate, possible translations you can find here: http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&search=Gemeinde&relink=on One must take into account that Landsgemeinde is a very old word, so I try to describe the origins of the word Gemeinde to understand it better: It derives from the word "gemein" and is a substantivation of this word, that means it is a noun made from a adjective. In general in german you can make every adjective or verb with the substantivation to a noun. "gemein" in modern german can mean "mean", but in past it meant just something like "usual", "common", "general", "ordinary" ... It was like the Opposit to exquisite, to nobility... The substantivaton of "common" is "community", the total of ordinary people. So I think "community" is the best way to translate, because that is the meaning best fitting the old meaning of Gemeinde and also a translation for Gemeinde, found in the dictionary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.64.73.178 (talk) 19:53, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, and Tagsatzung means something like "the setting of the day". There is a difference between giving an explanation of the literal meaning of a term, and a translation. A translation of "Tagsatzung" would be "Swiss Diet", a translation of "Landsgemeinde" would be "cantonal assembly". The earliest record of the German word Landsgemeinde I can find is in Frisius (1556). So, if there is the claim that the first Landsgemeinde is recorded for Uri in 1231, it would follow that it is recorded under another name (presumably Latin). The HLS seems to suggest that the medieval texts did not have a term directly translating to Landsgemeinde; rather, they say that "the people", or "all men" had decided this or that (universi homine ,universitas); it would appear that Gemeinde is here a translation of universitas. So, in the Federal Charter of 1291, where it has homines vallis Uranie, universitasque vallis de Switz ac communitas hominum Intramontanorum Vallis Inferioris, the terms homines, universitas and communitas hominum are more or less exchangeable synonyms of Landsgemeinde. --dab (𒁳) 07:55, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
