I've added links to the writer categories. Now someone should replace these links by the names from the categories. I also think the list should contain not just names but also year of birth and death, and maybe something about the style (poet, novelist, ...). Maybe important works could be mentioned. This would make the list more valuable. Piet 10:41, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That would be good! Also if people could add writers that aren't in Wikipedia but should be. --Jbmurray 14:05, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see little value in having a list of major writers in the main Latin America article, which is largely a duplicate of the list in this article. I note that Latin America#Painting links to the article Latin American painters but does not attempt to list them. I propose that the list of writers in Latin America be deleted, with any writer on the list not already in this article added here, and a link directly to this article be added to Latin America#Literature.-gadfium 18:50, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with merging. It is not the whole list. It's more like a mini-version of the Latin American writers article. Also it is convient to be able to glance over it on the Latin America article. I wouldn't mind if you shortened the list on the Latin America article though. I think that is reasonable. 72.166.213.68 23:13, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How should I shorten the list on the Latin America article? Should I restrict it only to those authors who have won a Nobel Prize for Literature (which would be a short list, but easy to verify), should certain other prizes also qualify writers, or should I try somehow to determine the most prominent writer from each country, and remove the others? There are bound to be people who will be upset when some writers are included and not others.-gadfium 02:44, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've just shortened the list somewhat. NB I note that a very similar list is also found at Latin American literature, and another (long and better than these other two, because with brief descriptions) forms part of List of Latin Americans). To have four such lists does indeed seem overkill, to say the least. Tentatively, my proposal would be to carry over much of the information from List of Latin Americans and to expand this page, along with dramatically reducing or even (better) eliminating the lists found at Latin America and Latin American literature, perhaps keeping there only the Nobel Prizewinners --Jbmurray 10:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Belize[edit]

LaNicoya moved Belize from the "Caribbean" category to "Central America." This makes eminent sense of course. However, in this context, I'd argue it makes more sense to see Belize as a Caribbean country, and so alongside (say) Jamaica and Suriname, rather than as a Central American country alongside Nicaragua or El Salvador. Of course, this is a bit of six of one and half a dozen of the other, and it's arguable either way. But culturally, and thanks to its particular colonial history, Belize tends to look towards the Caribbean rather than towards Central America. And the intention is to order this list by cultural rather than geographical categories, albeit in the knowledge that any categorization is necessarily flawed. --jbmurray (talk|contribs) 09:15, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it is a dilema. Problem is that if so, you could end up putting Argentina within European culture. ;o)
Anyway, I have no problem with either aproach. --Mariano(t/c) 12:30, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Gioconda Belli.jpg[edit]

Image:Gioconda Belli.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:36, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
