Roland Cassard[edit]

I was under the impression that the Roland Cassard of this film and his 'les parapluies de cherbourg' counterpart were the same character. In the latter film, Cassard mentions his first love as being Lola and the parallels between the two films are striking - Cassard's involvement with cecille and her mother/ the relationship between genevieve and her mother. I may be wrong - I'm a newcomer, so be gentle. The same actor (Marc Michel) also plays both parts.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.240.212.150 (talk • contribs)

Go back, if you will, to an odd scene in the middle of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg: Suave diamond merchant Roland Cassard is assuring Catherine Deneuve's mother that he's no stranger to the problems of love. "Autre fois ..." he begins to sing, initiating a new tune into the Michel Legrand score: "Once upon a time I loved a girl, her name was Lola, but she didn't love me." Umbrellas is a very stylized film, but in the middle of Cassard's lament, we cut back to a documentary-like shot of an old-fashioned shopping arcade, a quaint multi-level mall-like area.

The flashback does seem to evoke the setting from Lola. I'm not sure how conclusive this is, or if you can use it at all, but I thought I'd add it to the discussion. - —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.20.17.3 (talk • contribs)
