Information on the 10, 14 and 18 Tonners[edit]

I found a couple more resources by doing a Dutch language google search, note that the company that built them was NV Maschinefabriek Breda (the name had changed from Backer & Rueb in 1884)

The first reference is of the Breda book (which I don't have), its only a partial reference but the workslist at the end suggests ZASM 9-11 were similar to some 20 or so other locos built in 1886-90 and covered in Chapter 5a of the book - which unfortunately isn't included in the listing !

Note, the 10-tonners do not appear in the IMR/CSAR renumbering lists which means their sale to Delagoa Bay Railway must have been before IMR takeover.

14 tonner

I have a bit more here because the Rolling Stock Register (Centurion version) had the following;

ZASM 1 - IMR 601 - CSAR A

ZASM 2 - boiler 2318 became stationary boiler No. ?

ZASM 3 - boiler 2319 became stationary boiler No. 1585

ZASM 4 - IMR 604 - CSAR C

ZASM 5 - boiler 2334 became stationary boiler No. ?

The out of kilter renumbering suggests that only one of ZASM 2 and 3 survived into CSAR stock, presumably becoming "B". 2/3/5 were presumably allocated IMR 602/3/5 but apart from one of 602/3 which presumably became B - we don't know if they actually got renumbered.

CSAR "D" is a bit of a mystery as the Register suggests it both as ZASM 5 and one of the 18-tonners (Manning Wardle).

The 18 tonners (Manning Wardles) ZASM 9-14 were allocated IMR 606-611 but only one certainly survived into CSAR stock (E - but don't know which). Three (don't know which) became stationary boilers Nos 1592/93 and 1704, two were sold to industry.
