Gold Fish Plant Environment[edit]

Midwest care: Indoors in winter, looses all flowers, retains size. Warm weather, outside in filtered sun. Keep moist. Hummingbirds are easily attracted. Several showed up the first season. Unable to find info on pruning and feeding. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.95.62.206 (talk) 23:38, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pruning and Propagation[edit]

Prune cultivated 'goldfish' plants prior to the summer growing season to promote bushy branched growth. Prune the stem at a leaf node leaving the pair of leaves intact; this will promote branching at the leaf node.

This plant is easily propagated from cuttings. After pruning, dust the the cuttings with a rooting hormone and place them in water. Place the cuttings in a bright location ensuring the ends are kept submerged. Small roots will develop in 3-4 weeks. When roots are strong enough, remove from water and carefully transplant into a rich planting soil. Do not let the soil dry out between waterings as the roots are still tender. The shoots will not grow new leaves for some time as energy is being focused on root growth. Keep in a bright location and in 4-6 weeks, new growth will begin.
