This is a rail line of mostly local importance, with connections to the New Haven line. There is a sizable local interest because traces remain in highly populated Bronx and Westchester counties in New York. There have been 2-3 fan-type books created for it. Using the books (available from Westchester Library System) for citations we can make a far better article than this railroad might otherwise deserve!!! DCDuring 16:20, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article name[edit]

I was going to wait until this article had reached a more complete level as I see active work in updating the text, but seeing a disagreement on the name already, it's time to discuss it here.

There is a longstanding naming convention to include the word "Railway" or "Railroad" (or even "Rail Road") as appropriate for the company in the article title. Discussions have taken place over article naming standards for railway companies as early as 2004 in WikiProject Trains (there have been other discussions on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains that involved the use of these terms in article names) where we agreed to spell out the word "and" and use commas as appropriate (this much is already done here).

The use of "Railway" or "Railroad" in the article title helps avoid confusion; for example, Chesapeake and Ohio could refer to either Chesapeake and Ohio Canal or Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Based on this potential for confusion, in WikiProject Trains we have adopted a convention to always include "Railway" or "Railroad" as appropriate in the article name (see List of United States railroads or List of defunct United States railroads for many more articles that follow this convention) and make redirects and disambiguation pages from the abbreviated names as appropriate.

Based on these precedents and naming convention discussions, it seems to me that this article should be located at New York, Westchester and Boston Railway. Slambo (Speak) 21:01, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Issues Requiring Sources[edit]

The references provide a great deal of information and contain copies of a great deal of source material. Some questions remain open, however.

  • Did the legal entity labelled in the article as the "New York, Westchester and Boston Railroad Company" ever exist? Both Arcara and Bang say yes, but an issues of contemporary magazines about electric railroads use the the same corporate name in the prehistory period. Arcara makes a point of identifying some inaccuracies he found in these magazines concerning, for example, the physical locations of stations.
  • How did the $11 million purchase price paid by the Morgan committee for the stock bought in 1906 compare to the amount spent acquiring real estate?
  • From whom did the Morgan committee buy the stock?

Improvements[edit]

Steps for improvement:

  1. Acquire GPL rights to copyrighted graphics from Arcara (1985) or, less likely, Bang (2004).

Given the low importance ascribed to the article and the level of effort required, I do not intend further improvement of the article at this time. Corruption History[edit]

The graft involved in the franchise struggle and construction of the NYW&BRwy should make for an interesting and important story, which I'll b e adding soon. That's why the Tammany Hall graphic is in the article. I'm looking for other graphics, J.P. Morgan, Charles Sanger Mellen, a Dyre Avenue shot, as well as the route map and logo. Missing railroad[edit]

This line doesn't seem right;

"A lawsuit between the NY&P and the NYW&B was settled with the NY&P franchise being acquired by the NYW&B in early 1909 and the NY&P being consolidated into the NYW&B the following year."

The only "NY&P" I know about here is the New York and Putnam Railroad, which has nothing to do with the NYW&B. Either some info is missing, or somebody used the wrong reporting mark here. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 03:15, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
