Promo single?[edit]

Hey all,

I have a question. Is this song a single or a promo single? Usually, when songs only get sent to Australian radio, they are labelled a promotional single on Wikipedia. See Talk:Sour Candy (Lady Gaga song) for more info. Also: look at Imagine (Ariana Grande song). It was sent to Australian radio and was a promo single. I think the biggest valid argument is that TMN sends songs to radio, but doesn’t push them to single status. If someone could clarify this for me, that would be great. Thanks! There is a thin line on Wikipedia about which songs constitute as a promotional single, which has constantly been debated by several editors. The definition of a promotional single has significantly changed from the days of physical releases, as songs such as "Iris", "Don't Speak", and "All I Want for Christmas Is You" were not able to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 since they did not receive any commercial release, which was a rule implemented by Billboard until 1998, yet they were still considered singles. See Template talk:Infobox song#Release dates for further clarification. Several editors today have conflicting views on how promotional singles should be defined, as physical releases have been replaced by streaming and digital downloads.

In regards to "OMG What's Happening", BBC News, Idolator, and Vulture have indicated that it is a single. Max's marketing campaign for each of her singles usually consists of releasing the song as a digital download before being sent to radio; see "Sweet but Psycho". In contrast to "Imagine" where several sources directly stated that it is a promotional single, there are more cases for "OMG What's Happening" being a single than a promotional single. Max has actively made an effort to promote the song prior to the album's release than other songs such as "Blood, Sweat & Tears" and "On Somebody", and has also released a music video, which the other two songs have not done alongside "Imagine" and "Sour Candy". I would not rely on The Music Network to determine what constitutes as a single any more than other radio stations such as BBC Radio 1 and iHeartRadio, as radio-only releases only further prove that any song could be a promotional single; see "Silly Ho" and "No Scrubs", where the latter was deemed a single over the former despite heavy radio airplay from both songs. I think there needs to be a WP:RFC on WT:SONG to sort this out, as there are too many edit-wars and confusing statements about this subject matter. — Angryjoe1111 (talk) 18:22, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
