Needs expansion/clarification[edit]

Currently the Heiltsuk article is separate; the language may be known either as Oowekyala or Heiltsuk, the lattef only when used by the Heiltsuk Nation communities.

recent phd dissert. argues Oowekyala is different enough to be a separate lang; i'm convinced although i'm not a specialist. ---- ishwar

neither am I, but linguistic/national politics in BC are such that it's probably best to stay with the division. ---- Skookum1 (6 May 06)

Separation of language and ethno content[edit]

This article should be for the language only; whatever name is most appropriate for the people(s) who speak it should be the title of another article that all the content in this article about the big house, the village etc should go to; and NB a separate article for that community's/communities' government(s) and/or tribal council (if there is a tribal council in the Central Coast, and I don't think there is at present...). Also it seems that Heiltsuk-Oowekyala language should be its own, higher-tier article, encompassing both Heiltsuk language and Oowekyala language as subarticles (Yinka Dene Language Institute page uses "Heiltsuk-Oweek'ala language", which should obviously be a redirect....Skookum1 04:35, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
