Death[edit]

Cheque book?[edit]

'Gibbons name appears at this time in a cheque book of the Chapel'

Please explain the use of 'cheque book' in this context.

I had assumed that it referred to a cheque book e.g. that the chapel paid him, by means of a cheque, rather than in cash. But looking at the source, Harley (1999) here, it seems to have a more general meaning of "account or ledger of expenses." Martinevans123 (talk) 22:06, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It is certainly the latter—merely a document in which the expenses of the chapel were recorded. The careers of many Renaissance composers (particularly in England) can be tracked through them. Mentioned in podcast. Street pedlar tunes[edit]

In the podcast "No Such Thing as a Fish" ( No_Such_Thing_as_a_Fish episode 506) they say they'd read unconfirmed reports that Gibbons had composed tunes for street pedlars to sing to advertise their wares or services. They specifically mention people who cut off corns (on your feet, as in bunions). While plausible, is there any evidence of this? peter_english (talk) 18:34, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
