Transliteration of Tamil film titles[edit]

@Kailash29792: I am not sure whether this is the correct place to discuss this subject. But I write after seeing your remark that you changed the title as per Randor Guy's article. I think an encyclopedia should device its own way of transliteration than going by individual cases. I suggest the following transliteration: அ-a, ஆ-aa, இ-i, ஈ-ee, உ-u, ஊ-oo, எ-e, ஏ-ae, ஐ-ai, ஒ-o, ஓ-oh, ஔ-au, க்-k, ங்-ng, ச்-ch, ஞ்-gn, ட்-d ண்-nn, த்-th, ந்-n, ப்-p, ம்-m, ய்-yi,y, ர்-r, ல்-l, வ்-v, ழ்-zh, ள்-l, ற்-t, tr, ன்-n ஸ்-s, ஷ்-sh, க்ஷ்-ksh, ஹ்-h, ஜ்-j

We typically use the spelling as seen on posters and title cards. But I am not sure whether Poompaavai is still available that I can view it's spelling in the opening credits. Regardless of how the spelling matches the pronunciation, I chose to go with Randor Guy's spelling, as he appeared to be the only RS covering the film in detail (Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema says Poompavai, but I didn't see that until now, and it doesn't cover the film in detail). --Kailash29792 (talk) 05:22, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My point is, as an encyclopedia, Wikipedia should have a standard transliteration code of its own for writing the title only. The different spellings can be written in the article. You can see 'Encyclopedia of Indian cinema' and Randor Guy have written the name of this film in different ways. If you follow one, there may be another editor who would like to follow the other and change the title. I remember you quoted the 'Encyclopedia of Indian cinema' to change a title of an article created by me. Someone may even write "Puumpaavai". You may have noticed that RG sometimes gives wrong information. A case in point is Thilakam (1960 film). Check the year in his article. There are typing errors in the web pages of Film News Anandan's database. In the past, I have worked for a Tamil-language newspaper and we had a standard transliteration code to send Tamil messages by telegraph in English alphabets to prevent ambiguity in some words. (Eg. Aval can be written as அவல் or அவள்). My question is Why should an Encyclopedia depend on others to seek correct spelling in transliteration?--UKSharma3 06:11, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

மேலது or மேலுது?[edit]

Hi Uksharma3,

I can read Tamil but I'm not trying to change what you wrote or aggravate you. Just in the song book, this word: மேலது is spelled as மேலுது which transliterates as Meludhu not Meladhu. If you know Tamil language, you should know Meludhu has no meaning. Earlier I have told you that song books are only for guidance. One need not follow song books or posters letter by letter ignoring common sense. Thank you for your correction, I will revert it back to your revision immediately. I can only read tamil, and I am trying to learn to speak Tamil during this time and it is hard as English is my first language. Also I am not trying to aggravate or irritate you. I don't get joy in annoying others. I just ask questions hoping to get answers in a kind and respectable way. I think of you as an honor of Tamil cinema because upload many beautiful songs on your youtube channel. Everyday I listen to each of them and then think that there is someone on the internet who has put in a lot of effort to get old songs. Thanks for your kind words. You say that you are not fluent in Tamil and English is your first language. Then please limit your edits to correcting grammar and spelling of English words. There is no Standard Transliteration code in Wiki to write Tamil names and words. This article was created by @Kailash29792: with the title Poompavai. Then he moved it to Poompaavai because the former name may suggest பூம்பவை in Tamil. But you have now moved it back to Poompavai. I think it is an unwanted action. Please keep away from changing the spelling of transliterated Tamil names and words.
