[edit]The article's missing. — Stevey7788 (talk) 20:04, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

- It is a recreation of a vfd'd article though. It should go to Votes for undeletion. Tim! (talk) 07:48, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- Strictly speaking, it was not VFD'd - I speedily deleted the article that was up for VFD because it met CSD criteria as content-free. If the recreated article had suitable content, I'd say leave it - BUT I'm in favor of merging school stubs, so I like the way things are. FCYTravis 08:22, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ah ok, my misunderstanding... sorry. I hope the merger is acceptable to all. Tim! (talk) 09:30, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

Removed greatschools website
[edit]Whenever I visit the greatschools URL it proceeds to download an absolutely massive bit of real media spam. This is very hostile behavior and not something we would want to inflict on our readers. I'm going to remove references to that site, replacing with another reference site where none already exists, whenever I find it in a Wikipedia article. --Tony SidawayTalk 01:08, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- I've noticed the same problem, and it seems to be getting worse. That is unfortunate. Bahn Mi 18:39, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Oldest public high school?
[edit]I just undid an edit promoting this school from "second oldest" to "oldest public high school" without providing a source. The PHS website claims second oldest in continuous operation, so I left that for now. However, two other U.S. high schools claim to be older and another claims to be second oldest (quotes are from their WP articles):
- Boston Latin School, "is a public exam school founded on April 23, 1635, in Boston, Massachusetts, making it the oldest school in North America"
- English High School of Boston, "founded in 1821"
- Central High School (Philadelphia),"the second oldest public high school in the United States" "founded in 1836 and is a four-year, college preparatory, magnet school," that grants both high school diplomas and bachelors degrees
- Portland High School, "Established in 1821 as a boys' school, Portland is the second oldest public high school still operating in the United States, having been the third public high school to be established in the U.S"
Perhaps English HS and Portland HS are the two oldest public comprehensive high schools in the U.S. in continuous operation. But which opened first?--Hjal 19:20, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
edit from another user: the page now claims that PHS is the 14th oldest high school, but was the 3rd to be established. This is impossible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.228.178.10 (talk) 12:34, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Lets go with what the PHS website says.--TM 03:58, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
- So you're saying that this article is incorrect? We're just going to confuse people if we say PHS is the second oldest, while at the same time linking to an article that says it's the 15th oldest (or 13th oldest, depending on how you interpret the list). What we really need is a reliable third-party source. I'm not saying that the PHS web site isn't reliable, but it's obviously more prone to bias. –BMRR (talk) 05:04, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
- Well, that article is not reliably sourced either. The source confirming PHS as the 14th oldest public school is this, which is the history of the school on the city's website. I think the problem with that list is that it includes previously private schools. When I went to PHS, we were told it was the 2nd oldest continually public school in the country. The list includes a number of schools which were formed as private schools and are older than PHS like Hampden Academy.--TM 07:05, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Portland Public logo.png
[edit]Image:Portland Public logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Logo
[edit]I removed the duplicate photo of the school from the header and if I have time will try to extract the logo from e.g. [[1]]. MKV (talk) 14:34, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
