Naming of Quartermaster Canyon[edit]

I am quite certain Quartermaster Canyon was named after O. G. Howland, Lt. General John Wesley Powell's quartermaster during the Civil War. Howland; his brother, Seneca Howland; and William Dunn--all members of the Powell Geographic Expedition--abandoned the Powell Expedition near Quartermaster Canyon, and were soon thereafter killed. See UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN by Jon Krakauer. The citation in this article (regarding Quartermaster being a Hualapai Indian) is to a book of questionable accuracy, but I am unable to find a reputable citation supporting the Howland version of the Quartermaster naming story. I therefore am not going to change this part of the article even though I am certain it is incorrect. Modmajorgeneral (talk) 22:49, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
