New Mexico mystery rail with trail[edit]

Rails with trails includes a map from a reliable source, showing 2 rails with trails in New Mexico. One is the Santa Fe Rail Trail along the Santa Fe Southern Railway, but I cannot identify the other. Based on the relative positions of the dots on that map, the mystery railroad is either somewhere east of Taos, or somewhere west of Albuquerque. Help? this is off the top of my head, but I believe that there used to be a railway that went (I guess) from Santa Fe to Taos, along side the Rio Grande in part of the Gorge. There is a place called the Embudo Station in the gorge that was a train stop and the old water tank is still there. I wonder if that's what you are looking for ? It (the frain route) was referred to as the Chili Line, I think, which is what the public transportation system in Taos is called today. Carptrash (talk) 05:44, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is a very short description of that track in the WPA Guide to New Mexico. At the time the book was written, about 1940, the line seems to have been in operation. Today, on the parts I've seen, there is a path, 8 to 10 feet wide, but no tracks. Let me know if you want more - if this is what you are after. Thanks! Alas, a "rail with trail" by definition has an intact track with railroad traffic on it, so that eliminates the Chili Line. I contacted the government agency that produced the map and heard back from the person who made it. She recalls she put the second dot in New Mexico because she received an e-mail from someone saying there was a second rail with trail, but she cannot find the e-mail. I think the Santa Fe Southern Railway is the only one in New Mexico. (By the way, the proposed Rio Grande Trail would be a very cool rail to trail!) --Una Smith (talk) 13:48, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Probably this is the Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado line, still in operation as a tourist event. I took it one year, - my first time out with my (actually, my wife's) first digital camera. Anyway, if it's what you're looking for - we'll talk. I would guess that there is not a trail along most/much of the track. Some of it is straight UP on one side and straight DOWN on the other. I could be wrong. (tho please don't tell my wife and kids if I am) eeeeek aka Carptrash (talk) 00:32, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
