train differentials[edit]

hi as i wanted to know is that since the rollers are casted they are fixed and unlikely like automobile don have a differential so on the turn ho is it that the railway turn on a turn. is it that there is some mechanism which help the tires to rotate faster then the other ??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.242.78.215 (talk • contribs) 01:33, October 30, 2009‎

Typically, railroad wheels are mounted to solid axles. The shape of the wheel treads and the tops of the rails are slightly conical such that as the axle goes around a turn, the wheel on the outer side of the turn moves to the thicker part while the wheel on the inner side of the turn moves to the thinner part.
