Discussion: Rima the Jungle Girl[edit]

Things that need fleshing out:

  1. RIMA +HELEN This page needs more biographical information about the fictional character, it currently talks only about the history of the character's media appearances. Also there are really 2 characters, the book, and the comic book.
  2. The Spanish version of Wikipedia lists Rima as meaning melodic. The Novel describes Rima's native language to be beautiful like Bird-song.
  3. The novel and an obscure reference in the LeagueOfExtraordinaryGentlemen ( Reference : http://www.geocities.com/jessnevins/league3.html ) call here Riolama ( Novel : http://www2.cddc.vt.edu/gutenberg/etext97/gmans10.txt ) , after the real name of her true tribe, of which she is the last survivor. I cannot discover if this part of the DC character's history. Does anyone have the actual comic books?

I think that the first paragraph should be altered to emphasize the character's origin as a literary character (Green Mansions, 1904) over the later use of the character as a comic book hero. The book came first. More people have probably read the more. I would also wager that more people saw the movie than read the comic--Drvanthorp 05:49, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I read the book a couple of years ago, but don't have access to a printed copy now, but here is a link to an e-text of the out-of-copyright book: [1]

Like I said, it's been a while since I read the book, so there might be some inacuracies in my story summary.

The main character is Able, a young man in political exile in the Venezualan jungle after backing the wrong side during a political coup. He becomes part of a villiage of primitive tribesmen. The tribesmen hunt in the jungle, but are afraid to hunt in one region that they say is inhabited by the "daughter of the didi", a witch like creature.

Able beleives this to be merely tribal superstition, and explored the region on his own. He heres a strange bird-like but also human-like voice calling to him. He follows the voice, but at first find no-one. After many days, he catches a glimpse a beautiful young woman. She sits by a creek, and a small bird lands on her hand.

The tribesmen learn of Able's adventure in the Didi's realm, and try to recrute him to kill the woman with his revolver, but Able angrily tells the tribesmen that he is a civilized man, and civilized men do not kill women and children.

Able had more encounters with the strange girl in the jungle, then he finds the cabin of an old man named Nuflo. He befriends Nuflo, and has dinner with him. Nuflo's granddaughter arrives. Her name is Rima. Able realizes that this is the jungle girl, though she looks much different. Her clothing is different, and for some reason her coloring seems different. Able, in the naration, likens the transformation to that of songbirds that can display their bright plummage, then shift their feathers to change to a better camoflaged coloration.

Shortly thereafter, Able leaves the villiage, and moves in to Nuflo's Cabin.

Comment: it is very late right now, so I will add more to this book summary later. I will also add some analysis. But here is some comment in brief:

D.W. Hudson was a British naturalist known for his writings on South American birds. He had had exposure to nature, and to Venezualan native culture that most Victorian Englishmen did not have, but he was a Victorian first. Rima was a product of Victorian ideals; romanticization of nature and primitive living in the state of nature, the feminine mystique, the popular literay concept of "lost tribes", etc. Rima was a combination of the idealized woman and the idealized savage, with some bird-like characteristics thrown in. I'm sure that somewhere some academic person has written an analysis of the character that could be referenced for this article. --Drvanthorp 06:26, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

She was from South America. I believe she first appeared in a comic called Green Mansions, which was also made into a movie. I think she got her own comic later on, or maybe was a feature in something like Adventure Comics. I don't know too much about her.

It should also be noted that Rima's *original* appearance was in a 1904 novel called GREEN MANSIONS by W. H. Hudson. The RIMA, THE JUNGLE GIRL comic was loosely (very loosely) based on that.

It's 'Rima.' And actually, she's from William Hudson's novel "Green Mansions." The novel, having been written in, the early part of the century--1916 I think--is in the public domain, so anyone could use the character. And DC did publish a Rima comic in the 1970s, for what it's worth, tho' I don't think it was specifically DCU.

RETURN OF ATLANTIS:

CAST: Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Rima

PLOT: When the lost city of Atlantis arises, Aquaman is captured by Ocina and her warriors who plan to conquer the Earth, but they have to battle another female army, Wonder Woman and Rima and the Amazons of Paradise Island.

PERSONAL COMMENT:

Since Aquaman's role was a small one, I felt this episode was to appeal to female fans since it had a predominantly female cast. Ths is the last appearance of Rima the Jungle Girl.

ROB'S COMMENT:

NOTE: In this episode Atlantis is not Aquaman's home world. Also Rima's voice is different from her other 2 episodes.

This is the first series to combine 30 minute episodes with 7 minute shorts. The three shorts followed a certain pattern. Since Superman, Batman & Robin, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman are the original Super Friends, the first short featured an adventure starring two of them. The second short was devoted to the Wonder Twins, which gave viewers a chance to get acquainted with the new Junior Super Friends before the big adventure. The last short featured a guest star hero teamed up wit one of the regular heroes. Justice League members that guest appeared included Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman & Hawkgirl, and the Atom. A few new heroes with different ethnic backgrounds, namely Black Vulcan, Samurai, Apache Chief, and Rima the Jungle Girl also guest starred.


FIRE:

Batman, Robin, and Rima the Jungle Girl contend with a spreading forest fire, and have to search for a pair of escaped prisoners who have stolen a forestry truck filled with dynamite.


RIVER OF DOOM:

Wonder Woman, and Rima the Jungle Girl search for archaeologists, who have accidently stumbled onto a burial ground of angery natives. The archaeologists are capturd and sentenced to death on the River of Doom.

GCDB Link Broken[edit]

The link to the GCDB is broken. I'd fix it but I don't understand the markup being used. It seems like custom markup for GCD entries that in theory points to the proper page (http://www.comics.org/series/2152/), but lands on a 404 error page.
