I added some information from the Encyclopedia of Chicago, but it is short on the construction of the filtration plant, and the novelty of the project when Chicago undertook it. There are few specific data on volume of water treated, or on the challenges of the construction. My first hunt for sources did not turn up reliable information. I know it was a big project, a leader in the field of providing good clean water for Chicago and neighboring communities in the watershed of Lake Michigan.
