STS-5[edit]

A fascinating discussion on Collectspace - they seem to know their onions - suggests that for STS-5 alone the pilot and commander had to wear part of this suit on top of their coveralls, because it was designed to strap them into the seat. STS-5 was the only shuttle mission that flew with the ejection seats in place but disabled. This training photo here at the now-defunct JSC image archive supports this, but (a) I can't find another similar image (b) that particular image doesn't seem to exist anywhere else on the internet (c) the JSC image website didn't lend itself to archiving, so it's very hard to find other images from STS-5 on it. And in practice the bib would only have been worn very briefly, during takeoff and landing, when no-one was taking photos. Is there are more formal source for this? -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 09:31, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
